Injured

I just received bad news. I sustained a metatarsal stress fracture and I have IMcoz in less than 40 days. I can bike and swim but can't run. What do I do? I'm finishing the IM even if I walk the entire marathon. I'm a fast swimmer and a 6hr or under bike rider so I should be ok on time.

  • Kimberly, please post this to the injury forum to get feedback from the experts / your peers. I think it depends on which metatarsal head and the severity of the stress fracture. You should plan on swim/bike only at this point, and you can continue those out of the plan (just watch pushing off the wall in the pool). Please let me know more about what you've done. You can also call or text me to discuss: (617) 513-3830 Cell Phone (EST Time)

Totally bummed for you but we'll figure something out!!
  • Update.... I saw the podiatrist I am in a boot but able cleared to bike indoors on trainer. Primarily because I have no flat areas to bike. He stated hills would be too much stress on the fracture at this point (2nd metatarsal). He wants me in the boot for 2 more weeks maybe 3. No running attempts at all until race day. His advice was to run or walk based on how it feels race day. I'm the director of an OR so one of the bennies was to receive a bone stimulator today. Insurance wouldn't pay but the Biometric rep loaned it to me.

I'm doing okay on One legged wall pushes in the swim but what should I do about bike plan? Keep it the same or add some days due to no running? I did buy a theraband to keep working on leg strength

  • Kimberly definitely check into the homeopathic stuff too (boneknit, etc)...can't hurt! I say we want you active 6 out of 7 days. So keep the Wed ride but move it to Tuesday, repeat it on Thursday (Swim Wed and Friday), then bike as you can on Sat and Sun. The big bike is Sat, just time in the saddle as close to goal workout time...all others can be 2/3 of recommended time / as your sanity allows. You should stop if you feel any pain / discomfort, of course.

Did he say anything about orthotics to remove pressure from the metatarsal?
