Bootcamp and other cross training activities
Hi,
Prior to taking my recovery period I had a routine which included attending a bootcamp class on Sunday, a Brazilian Body Blast class on Thursdays (this is like a body sculpt class) and a plyometrics class on Friday. I did feel like these classes were useful, increased my strength and helped me tone. I found that they also - or in my opinion - increased my performance. The bootcamp class was structured around interval training.
I have been doing my run focus plan now and I am looking forward to starting the Out Season. I am wondering tho - where do these types of activities fit in to my/a training plan/schedule. I know a lot of athletes do cross training.
Also - during the winter I *sometimes* teach spin. I say sometimes because I sub and come in only when they call me. Example: they asked me to teach on Tuesday of next week; the one gentleman is going to be on vacation. Do I flip workouts/days? How should I work this in to my week's schedule?
Thank you!

Hi Terra,
This is a very common question. Our observation, across 6-7 x OS training seasons, has been that the addition of extracirricular activities to our OS training plan is sustainable in the short term, call it the first 4-5wks, and then it really starts to stack up and become very, very difficult to fit it. And it will begin to impact your sport-specific training.
The OS is tough. If you haven't trained like this before (ie, you've done a lot of tradition LSD, base training, steady/easy volume stuff) our style of work in the OS will be a big shift for you. My recommendation is to keep doing what you've been doing, but REALLY keep an eye out for signs that the cumulative effect (OS + the stuff you've been doing) is too much. Then my guidance would be, as your triathlon coach, to cut the non-sport-specific sessions, or at least turn them down a lot.
