Real time TSS

This is something I've wondered about since getting the Garmin 500. There is a data field for TSS, but how can the unit give TSS without knowing you're FTP? My understanding is that The formula for TSS is....(seconds X NP X IF)/(FTP X 3600) X 100. So if the unit doesn't know what the FTP is how can it calculate TSS, or even IF for that matter, since IF is NP/FTP ? Or is there a way to program in the FTP that I'm unaware of?

I just calculate the TSS and IF after the ride but it would be nice to have it in real time if possible.

  • I just looked at my Garmin 500 tonight...similar question in mind.  Follow this sequence to tell it your FTP:

Bike settings --> Bike profiles --> Power Zones -->  FTP is the first line.  You can enter your zones too, but it won't let you skip any wattages like the EN Zones are typically presented.

    Hope that helps.

  • Awesome!! Thanks Jeff image

Yup. Make sure your FTP is accurate and the same across whatever platforms you're using: Garmin devices, WKO, Strava, etc
