tire for trainer

I'm looking for a tire for my wife's bike. She rides on 650c wheels. I have a vittoria zaffiro tire on a wheel for my bike and found the same tire on Amazon with size 26x 1 inch. Would that fit on the 650c wheel?

  • I ride 650 wheels. The tires I currently use are Continental 4000 for everything .. Trainer, training, racing. In the past, I've used Schwalbe, Vittoria, Serfas, and Michellin.

26 in x 1 in may be mountain bike tires. Wont go into details, but mtn bike rims are NOT the exact same size as the wheels we use on the 650 TT bikes.

Two places to find 650c tires n tubes are Trisports.com, which has a special 650 "store" on their site, and R&E cycles in Seattle, which has Serfas Seca tires, reasonably priced . Not recommended for racing, but a good choice for trainer and winter use.

Look at the links to the left, its the first one.
  • When I first bought the trainer a few years ago, I rode with my reg road tire and it wore down before I realized what was happening. That doesn't happen to the Continental 4000?

Myabe the type of trainer has some impact? I use a CompuTrainer. I find that riding on the roads "wears out" my tires faster than the trainer, due to all the little nicks and scrapes I get out on the roads, which then pick up grit or small sharp objects, especially when the roads are wet, which they are a lot around here.

I'm lazy, and ride my TT bike a lot outside even during the winter, and don't want to be changing tires all the time. I could use another wheel, I guess, but I have a PowerTap hub, and like the consistency of using that for my power data across the trainer and outdoors.

BTW, the reason those "26 inch" tires won't work ... mtb rims are 559 mm in diameter, "650c" rims are 571 mm. Those one inch/26" tires are for folks who want to use their mountain bike for riding around on roads exclusively ... I also use them on my mtb to put it on the trainer.

  • I've got one of those lovely orange Continental tires; same one for over 3 years now. When I first used it, it shredded/snowed orange shaving for weeks! Now it's mostly flattened and blackened through the middle section - but it still works!

All my tires get flattened though, as I'm a big dood.
