Plant based protein

Hi all!

I was looking for any advice on a plant-based protein. I am vegan and gluten free and have been trying to get a good plant based protein for my smoothies. I have used Vega, but I didn't like the way it made me feel after....I felt really nausea as weird as that may be.  Anyone have any other good brands or types that work well?

  • Laura, Agree on Vega I have tried several of their products and didnt like any of them. I use shelled hempseed or Garden of Life Raw Meal.
  • I am not a vega fan either, and truth me told I do not like shakes. Not sure if you are okay with Soya, but what about that. You could use the kind that they use in puddings. Just a thought.
  • I thought Iwould be the only one who had a bad experience with Vega since everyone always seems to rave about it! So glad to know I'm not alone! Thank you for the suggestions! @ Tim- I will def look into the Garden of Life Raw Meal... I was actually just looking at it yesterday in the health food store but went with a trial packet of Plant Fusion instead!! @ Brenda I will def look into Soya as well...but I do try to limit the amount of soy protein I take in. Thanks again! image
  • Thought you two might also be interested in this two vids. I to am gluten free, plant based.

Not sure if you are familiar with Dr. Gregor or not.

  • Thank you Brenda!! The first video on Nutritional Yeast worked and WOW! SO interesting!! I need to def work that into my diet...Esp being a teacher, I am around so many germs!! Thanks for sharing! (the other link didn;t work)

  • I consume buckets of nutritional yeast and put it on just about everything... Like hemp its also a complete protein...
  • Dr. Gregor's website. FREE. Sign up and you get his weekly video in your mailbox. Lots of good stuff.

  • Just eat some meat and be done with the veggie stuff. We are made to eat meat stop living like your in the west coast and chow down on a steak. image
  • @ Brenda- Thank you! Signing up for that for sure!

@ David- haha very funny! You sound like some of my family members. My husband isn't vegan (AT ALL) but understands...as for the rest of my family...I hear a lot of that on the holidays when we are all together.

  • I'm a pretty big fan of Vega as it works great for me, but I see from this thread that there are many people who do not enjoy it at all. Therefore I may not be the best person to respond to this. Are you looking for protein options in a post workout recovery smoothie? Regular daily smoothies? Or for pre-workout?

The reason I ask is because you may not need the protein powder at all. For daily use, as Tim suggested, you can probably get sufficient protein from whole foods such as chia seeds and hemp seeds by just adding a couple of tablespoons to your smoothie. For post-workout, I typically have a great big smoothie filled with greens with some berries for antioxidant support, and will eat a bowl of quinoa (great protein) or another whole food source that includes some legumes (for protein) within an hour of finishing my workout; I find it to be a very satisfying to eat my protein :-)

I'm personally shying away from processed protein powders despite their ease of use. If it's for daily smoothies, as long as you are eating a balanced diet, you probably don't need the protein powder.

But if you do want to use protein powder, I've heard good things about Sunwarrior brand (http://www.sunwarrior.com/); although never used it myself since I use the Vega products.

Let us know what you do end up trying out, and if it's any good.
  • All great stuff Naomi, and for its worth, I have tried the sunwarrior brand as well and did not like it, but I really think it comes down to me not liking powders at all. I like smoothies, but I like them made with real food and I add chia seeds, like Naomi says for the protein, or a nut butter. I know that adds fat, but it also satiates me.
  • @ Naomi- Thank you for the info!! I appreciate it   Basically I am doing a smoothie for breakfast. The thing is, without the protein, I seem to get hungry way before lunch and as a teacher, I can't just whip out a snack and start chomping while teaching my kids.  I guess I could try to see if I could put something else with it so I will stay fuller longer! I just started looking through the No Meat Athlete book to get ideas on nutrition to sustain endurance athletes...hopefully that will help too! Thanks again for the help!

  • I snack as well, but I snack on carrots, apples, vegan friendly crackers etc. while at work.  I probably have more time flexiblity when to eat, but having fruit available makes a big difference for me.  I do not use protein powder at all for smoothies, but I am a fan of Vega pre-workout drink, and post work out recovery in a pinch.

I also am a big fan of nutritional yeast, chia and hemp seeds.  I also bring naked juice with me to work, quick and easy good nutrients and fills me up.

  • I thought I heard/read that vega just had a voluntary recall on some products? Has anyone tried the vegan protein powder or bars from OFB (organic food bar) before? I remember some of their bars when they first came out but haven't heard much feedback on the powder. I'm also trying to find a plant-based protein option.
  • @ Peter, Someone else just said that about Vega too! I asked my chiropractor about it, and he said that the saviseed in vega has caused some people problems!  I have had Vegan OFB bars before (my chiro sells them) they are awesome! However, higher in fat/cals than I like to see, but its a whole food bar which is great.  I have not tried the protein powder before, but maybe that's next! This week I tried PlantFusion and enjoyed it.  I have also been hearing a lot about pea protein, which seems to be a great source! Will def keep the thread updated on any other products I try  P.S. I am a fan of Lara bars when in need of something quick, and I found out this week that the Lara ALT bars have pea protein in them and in turn a higher protein content!

  • @ Laura - yeah the OFB bars are high in cals....but the taste is tough to beat. I had their "protein" specific bar the other day after a workout and it's one of the only protein specific bars I have ever had that doesn't have that powder-taste to it. Probar has a new protein bar out as well, but tastes like those clif builder bars. I hope your training continues to go well. With regards to Syracuse 70.3 I am not sure if you would get the money back or if it would affect anything with lake placid as they were a combo. I have to check on this myself!

  • I personally do not like the Vega products. They must use some weird sweetener that bothers my tummy and my taste buds. I prefer spirulina protein. Have you ever tried Spriu-Tein?
  • The Larabar protein bars use pea protein. I wonder if you can buy that on its own somewhere?
  • @Paula - there is a big thing lately about Naked containing formaldehyde.

@Peter - I like the new Probar... I LOVE their meal bars tho.

@Laura - Have you read Rich Roll's book? Lara Bars are one of my favorite, but have you tried Raw Revolution? They are similar, but I think a bit more filling. They have a higher fat content and contain more calories.
  • @Peter - Yes - you can purchase pea protein. There is a company that also makes a pea, hemp and rice combo: http://www.amazon.com/RevolutionVS-Pea-Hemp-Rice-Protein-Supplement-Powder/dp/B008YAKO90
  • The pea, hemp , rice combo looks good...

    Anyone try this one yet?

    https://www.onnit.com/foods/
  • Nope, but that looks amazing. I have tried the Living Harvest and Trader Joe's brand Hemp Proteins. The trader Joe's one is very reasonably priced.
  • @ Terra, will have to look into that book and try Raw Revolution!! I have been using Plant Fusion which is a combo of of pea protein and artichoke protein, only thing I don't like is that it has stevia in it, and I'm not a fan.  WIll have to try out these other combo proteins next!

Thanks for all the info everyone! Love learning more about great vegan choices image

  • Manitoba harvest makes good hemp protein products....powders, and hemp hearts.
