Plant based protein
Hi all!
I was looking for any advice on a plant-based protein. I am vegan and gluten free and have been trying to get a good plant based protein for my smoothies. I have used Vega, but I didn't like the way it made me feel after....I felt really nausea as weird as that may be. Anyone have any other good brands or types that work well?

Not sure if you are familiar with Dr. Gregor or not.

@ Brenda- Thank you! Signing up for that for sure!
@ David- haha very funny! You sound like some of my family members. My husband isn't vegan (AT ALL) but understands...as for the rest of my family...I hear a lot of that on the holidays when we are all together.
The reason I ask is because you may not need the protein powder at all. For daily use, as Tim suggested, you can probably get sufficient protein from whole foods such as chia seeds and hemp seeds by just adding a couple of tablespoons to your smoothie. For post-workout, I typically have a great big smoothie filled with greens with some berries for antioxidant support, and will eat a bowl of quinoa (great protein) or another whole food source that includes some legumes (for protein) within an hour of finishing my workout; I find it to be a very satisfying to eat my protein :-)
I'm personally shying away from processed protein powders despite their ease of use. If it's for daily smoothies, as long as you are eating a balanced diet, you probably don't need the protein powder.
But if you do want to use protein powder, I've heard good things about Sunwarrior brand (http://www.sunwarrior.com/); although never used it myself since I use the Vega products.
Let us know what you do end up trying out, and if it's any good.
@ Naomi- Thank you for the info!! I appreciate it Basically I am doing a smoothie for breakfast. The thing is, without the protein, I seem to get hungry way before lunch and as a teacher, I can't just whip out a snack and start chomping while teaching my kids. I guess I could try to see if I could put something else with it so I will stay fuller longer! I just started looking through the No Meat Athlete book to get ideas on nutrition to sustain endurance athletes...hopefully that will help too! Thanks again for the help!
I snack as well, but I snack on carrots, apples, vegan friendly crackers etc. while at work. I probably have more time flexiblity when to eat, but having fruit available makes a big difference for me. I do not use protein powder at all for smoothies, but I am a fan of Vega pre-workout drink, and post work out recovery in a pinch.
I also am a big fan of nutritional yeast, chia and hemp seeds. I also bring naked juice with me to work, quick and easy good nutrients and fills me up.
@ Peter, Someone else just said that about Vega too! I asked my chiropractor about it, and he said that the saviseed in vega has caused some people problems! I have had Vegan OFB bars before (my chiro sells them) they are awesome! However, higher in fat/cals than I like to see, but its a whole food bar which is great. I have not tried the protein powder before, but maybe that's next! This week I tried PlantFusion and enjoyed it. I have also been hearing a lot about pea protein, which seems to be a great source! Will def keep the thread updated on any other products I try P.S. I am a fan of Lara bars when in need of something quick, and I found out this week that the Lara ALT bars have pea protein in them and in turn a higher protein content!

@Peter - I like the new Probar... I LOVE their meal bars tho.
@Laura - Have you read Rich Roll's book? Lara Bars are one of my favorite, but have you tried Raw Revolution? They are similar, but I think a bit more filling. They have a higher fat content and contain more calories.
Anyone try this one yet?

@ Terra, will have to look into that book and try Raw Revolution!! I have been using Plant Fusion which is a combo of of pea protein and artichoke protein, only thing I don't like is that it has stevia in it, and I'm not a fan. WIll have to try out these other combo proteins next!
Thanks for all the info everyone! Love learning more about great vegan choices
