Garmin 510 Drops Quarq at B2B 140.6

At the Beach to Battleship 140.6 Saturday I had a problem with my Garmin 510 losing my Quarq...four times!  I know it was the 510, because my 310XT never missed a moment.  I have never seen this problem before in all my training.

I found that if I completely turned off the 510 and turned it back on it would find the Quarq.  But it was not only gone when the bike started, but through the run I lost it 3 more times.

Anybody have a similar issue?  Love the 510 and I was disappointed to see this issue crop up for the first time at the "A" race.  It left me blind on power at times.

  • Pat - i had the same thing happen to me at boulder 70.3 this past august.  Same deal.  I had my 910 and that picked up my power readings so i knew the problem was isolated to the 510.  It had never happened before or since so i just chalked it up to user error on my part, thinking that i must not have synced it up properly before the start of the race.  I had kinda forgotten about until i read your post so now i'm interested to see if others have had a similar problem and maybe it is some type of firmware issue.

  • While my Joule has been a PITA with inconsistent numbers, I'd rather have it connected the whole time than some reporting issues! I just ordered a 510 yesterday!
  • HEart rate sensor on or off? This ia an issue with the 500.
  • Robin, I see heartrate channel data in the 3 files from the 510 when I restarted it. BUT I see neither heartrate nor power data in the first file from the start of the bike till I figured out to turn it off/on to acquire the signals.

What can you tell me about the problem with the 500? Any links to which you can point me?
  • I had the exact same thing happen to me over this past summer .. My 510 started dropping the signal from my Quarq Power Meter. Except later it was obvious that it was not the 510 but the Quarq as my Garmin 910XT also lost the signal. Not that noticeable initially because at first the signal drop would only happen for seconds and only occasionally. However it progressively got worse and it happened for longer periods of time and more frequently. It reached the point that there was no signal at all. I contacted Quarq customer service (via email) and they suggested a few things (hard reset, ensure the magnet was positioned correctly, etc.) ... but when these did not fix the issue, they asked me to send the Quarq to them (Quarq paid for the shipping). They determined that it was a failed unit and replaced it with a new RIKEN Power Meter since my Quarq S975 was no longer in production. Total time without a power meter was 1 calendar week. Can't say enough about the responsiveness and quality of service from Quarq.

However, since you've determined that it is the 510 and not the Quarq, you might want to contact Garmin or check out the 510 Forum. Here is the link: https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?363-Edge-510

  • Pat. For the 500, If you do not have hr monitor on your body, and the garmin is set to hr monitor present, can not calibrate. Not sure if something similar applies to you.
