Trek speed concept

My wife rides a speed concept and servicing these bikes is a bigger pain than any other bike I've ever worked on. Especially the rear brakes. Adjusting them is the big problem. Her rear wheel keeps rubbing against one of the brake pads. This has been an ongoing problem. When the bike gets serviced it's fixed for a a few rides but then the brake calibers shift again and the rubbing begins. I've tried to adjust them myself but because on these bikes the whole rear brake mechanism is internal it's difficult. The problem seems to be that the space between the brake pads is just too narrow. Does anyone who rides a speed concept have a solution for how to widen the space. I haven't had much luck googling this. And would rather fix it at home than take the bike into the shop again.

Any help is appreciated.

  • Remove the washers that are on the inside of the caliper and between the caliper and the brake pad. That's what I did and it solved the issue.
  • My understanding of this is Trek knows about the problem and hasn't addressed the issue for a fix / easy adjustment. Your best option is 1. don't change wheel sets. 2. Change pads if you change your wheels. 3. Get very good at adjusting this yourself.

I like option 3, good luck the price you pay for a nice ride.
  • @Bob thanks seems to have created some extra space.

  • Check to see if the rear derailleur hanger is bent.  I had the same problem you describe and it was  the rear derailleur hanger.  $15 for par and labor and no more problems.

  • @Bruce I have had that problem previously and recently had the rear derailleur hanger changed. I fixed the the problem by moving the biggest of the 3 washers to the outside of the break caliper. Opened up a few millimeters of space and no more rubbing.
