FTP Tests

Hi All

EN Newbie so be nice

Are all FTP tests the same?? e.g. before joining EN I used the Sufferfest Rubber Glove 20min FTP test, which is different in duration and warm up (but not the painful 20 minute bit!) to say the Hunter Allan / EN FTP test. If I was to switch to the EN FTP test after 8 weeks of Outseason would i get a comparable result??

or is the key thing that you consistently test with the SAME FTP test.....

Many thanks

Graham (in the UK!)

  • Most important is to test in same environment in which you train. Trainet>>Trainer, outside >> outside. There are several different ways to determine FTP (EN wiki lists 4, there are others). As long as you get within 5% +-, its OK for training purposes, IMO. With 3 bike sessions a week based off FTP, you'l quickly find out if the # you came up with is accurate, depending on if workouts are too easy or too hard OVER TIME Meaning, we can all power thru one wko, but maintaining week after week ... Another story.

Scientific types (engineers, etc) might prefer consistecny in method for comparison purposes.
  • I would say the a 20 min. test is a 20min. test...it is important to have the 5min. clearing effort prior to the 20min. test ...does sufferfest rubber glove have this?...if not...I would switch....

...however the most important thing is ..consistency....which ever method you use ...you should use it consistently across the training period.
