Hi Guys!

My wife consented to and encouraged me to  get out of the Great White North over our Spring Break!  I will be ready to put on some road miles and really take advantage of some selfish time away from the family (they will all be away on racing trips of their own).  My question is two part:

a)  I am booked from March 16-25.  How much riding is advised and how should I structure the rides?  I have buddies coming with me, but I will be free to ride as much as possible.  I would like to put a serious hurt on myself.

b)  I am thinking Phoenix.  Good place to ride in March?  Good rides to do?

Thanks,  Jud

Please see our Volume Training Series. You'll find it in the Wiki / Self-Coaching, about 2/3 down the page.

  • Hi Rich!
In this week's podacasts the discussion centered on adding time to the long run and long bike for some athletes. If I am doing IMCDA in June, should I be doing more, considering that I am only able to get biking time on the trainer? Same question for the running - no chance on traveling out to do a half marathon, but I can make one here for myself - ideas?

Also, a buddy of mine is putting together a 30 for 30 running Challenge for January. Is this a good idea for me to add on?

I'm booked to Phoenix in March for 8 days of long rides, but will miss the Rally due to when my Spring Break falls for school.

    Thanks for the help!

Nope, no need to ride longer right now, you're fine.

30/30: which is your relatively weaker sport, the bike or the run? What is your run durability like?

  • My weaker sport is a toss up. I feel like I have more room to improve on my bike. My IM bike time is at 6 hours and my best IM marathon time was 4:35. Run durability is good. No injury issues to worry about for either.

Ok. 30/30 probably isn't a very good idea for EN athletes in the OS. I'm sure your friend isn't doing the work on the bike that you are/will be doing and there for what works for him will likely not work for you. That said, maybe make a goal for 5x/wk (20/30?) and just be smart.

  • Hi Rich! Same kind of question - just got an email for the Tour of Sufferlandia. I have never done it before, but I have seen it mentioned in the threads. Would this be a good thing to try out?

    Thanks, Jud

Ugg...I can tell I'm gonna need to do a Sufferlandia thread next week, as I've seen this question a lot this week...

Here's the deal: if you wanna ride fast you gotta ride fast. Volume like that comes at the expense of the intensity that makes you faster, not to mention that you're doing indoors on a trainer = a huge mental cost. I see you're doing IMCDA. I've raced CDA 3x and have coached about a bazillion people to the race. Folks from all over the country with a range of winter cycling limitations and opportunities. I can't say that the people who did volume in the winter (ie, SoCal folks like me who can ride as much as we want pretty much year round) were any faster on the bike than NorthEast folks who just hammer intervals on the trainer. The return on race day certainly wasn't worth the time investment.

The formula that absolutely WORKS is to ride fewer hours so you can ride harder = get faster now, then add volume to it beginning in about April. Something like ToS would be much more valuable ~mid-May through early June. Not so much now.

  • Thanks! It's just that affiliation with Trainerroad and Sufferfest makes this Sufferlandia sound so good. I am happy with the results so far and will keep on the plan. I appreciate the help!

  • Hi Rich! I am missing the Swim Camp to upload in my Training Plans - also missing the Intermediate Get Faster Plan. Can I get these sent into the plan? Thanks!

    Judson,

Not sure what you mean by missing? Missing where? Where are you trying to do this?

Go here, click on the Move/Change My Plan button, follow the instructions and you should be able to see these in the dropdown. We're not able to show/hide individual plans from individual athletes so I know this is absolutely working for everyone else.

  • Hey Jud,

I logged in as you and everything works, I could see the plans, etc. Screencast here

Maybe try a different browser?? We have a LOT of people in these plans so if they were invisible to everyone I definitely would have heard about it by now.

  • Thanks for saying your were viewing in Chrome. I logged in using Safari and I can see ALL of the plans now. Firefox only let me see 18 different options. Much better and will use Safari from here on. Jud

Ugg...no idea that was happening. Phookin' technology. Chrome has been acting funny for me on the site and pretty soon I'll need to be running 3x browsers at once...

  • Hi Rich!

I am just finishing the intermediate NOS and it's testing week next week. I have only one race planned this year (IMCDA) as I live in the Yukon and must travel to find any triathlons. A couple of questions:

    1. Plan calls for a Half Marathon or 10 km next Sunday - there are no races and it's going to be -20 next week with icy roads and snow. I have polled a few of the other athletes and it looks like they are mostly doing 5 k's. My run will probably have to be on the treadmill where I have been most of my workouts. What distance should I do?

    2. Longer term question - but it's related to the question above. I am heading to Tucson again this year at Spring Break (March 22) and I signed up for the Desert Half Marathon at the beginning of the week. The purpose of the trip is to get bike volume and see the sun again. Should I use that Half as a replacement for this week's test and go 100% or as a training run?

    Thanks, Jud

    Hey Jud,

    • For your final OS test, just do whatever flavor test(s) you've done elsewhere in the OS, so we can compare your improvement, distance to distance, if that makes sense.
    • Absolutely do the race as a race, 100% full gas, not as a training run.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Rich!
Looking ahead to plan for the longer workouts in May and noticed that during the Camp Week of the Full Intermediate Plan (Week 15) there is no workout or mention of the Thursday - is this on purpose?

-35 here this morning - 10 days solid now - damn, I can't wait for Tucson in March!
