My Hamstring problem

Dealing with this issue, literally a pain in the butt, probably caused by new bike 7 weeks prior to IMLP with the seat too high. I just got a TTbikefit with Todd. Definiteley worth the trip up to RI. Had some PT, Orhto eval, and two sessions of ART with good but temporary relief. 3rd ART Friday and dry needling on Saturday. I have been doing eccentric strenghthening and glute and hip flexor strecthing. The Hamstring stretches (I have tried three different) seem to make it worse so I'm laying off those. Ran 3miles last Sat with no pain but then had ache doing 1 mileMonday and stopped. Wednesday ran 3 miles minimal ache and biked easy 45 minutes.  I think I need to be patient but continue to run easy and short even if it aches a little. I have read the threads on the forums here as well as ST and scoured blogs and websites.  I wish I could share the OS pain instead of this achey pain.  Anybody with any other input?

  • How about just rest.

You still have swim and bike go enjoy some focused time with your other two sports and maybe some pool running.
  • Tried two weeks of nothing then three more weeks of no running with no change.  I think the bike focus plan and slow increase run milage zone 1 only
  • Are you sure it is hamstring and not sciatic nerve stuff? What do you mean by hamstring stretches made it worse? Like hurt while doing them, or continued pain afterwards? Any idea if you are a hamstring or glute dominant runner? Any pain during any other activities besides running (certain positions, stairs, etc)?
  • Pain at the extreme of the hamstring stretch and inflames it for awhile after. Someone,I think it was an ENer, recommended downward dog as a mild strech for posterior leg and I have been doing that without pain. Of course my glutes don't fire enough and my hip flexors are tight and I need to work on these. It's not sciatic, but I'm doing pyriformis and glute steching which does not bother me but these are tight.
  • Try using a tennis ball as some self soft tissue mobilization, kinda sit on it and roll around the painful area. Definitely stretch in ways that don't inflame it- downward dog is great. Also try slight variations of downward dog to stretch different areas- spread your feet a bit further apart, or turn your feet in or out. Stretch gastrocs too, as when these are tight, hamstrings can actually take some more stress. Avoid running hills for now, or any speed work. Be mindful of any pain with biking- sometimes just the saddle can put pressure on/near hamstrings insertions and anger things. Pretty much you want to stay active but avoid anything that would inflame it- a gentle ache is ok, any more acute pain, stop.
  • Thanks Rachel and David
  • 5 mos of rest or stretching or ART or Accupuncture has not made a difference so next week I am going to try a PRP injection and then three weeks before I'm allowed to run. Hopefully I can swim with pull buouy and ride easy a few days after. This is very depressing.
  • wow it has been a long time no wonder your getting depressed. It gets to the point of there isn't anything left to do?
