Transition/Special Needs Bags checklist

In preparation for IMAZ, I'm trying to figure out what I should have in my respective bags for the day. This will be my first IM and I'm a bit lost as to what are necessity items and what I can do with out. When racing HIM, I'm a minimalist (bike: helmet, socks, shoes, sunglasses & run: socks, shoes, visor, sunglasses, race belt). I never mess with sunscreen (morning application) or nutrition (eat/drink on course) in transitions. I've been able to get away with this for HIM, but I'm thinking for the full, I'm going to need to plan better.

Is there a checklist of items I can look over to make sure I've covered all my bases?

Thanks!

  • Everyone is a little different and that list will change from race to race as each race faces different conditions (what you put in your bike bag for IMAZ maybe very different than what folks put in their bike bag for IMLT).  Weather, race plan, how long you will be on the course, and how you decide to fuel yourself will all affect that list.  But FWIW, here is my list from IMMT earlier this year:

    Smarwool Socks (if cold)
    Arm Warmers (Tube Socks/if cold)
    Leg Warmers (if cold)
    Towel
    Arm Coolers (if hot)
Sunscreen (cream for face, spray for body)

    Dry Socks

  • Go to the Wiki and unde rRace Execution there is a heading race prep Checklists which is a start. You have the basics, but you seem to be asking another question in regards to nutrition which is a bigger and separate issue. If the drink, bars, and or gels that ou want are on the course then you're good to go. If you need calorie and or electrolyte supplements you have to plan in which bag(s) you want to stash those: T1, BSN, T2 , and /or RSN.
  • @Nemo, this is exactly what I was looking for...thank you!!!

@Robert, what is funny is that if I had to pack my bags right now, my additional nutrition (will use on course nutrition for the most part) would be the only thing in there, haha!

    Thanks for the guidance guys!
  • @Nemo What is the $1 bill for?

  • My guess - Dollar bill is for booting a sliced tire....  I use a $20 bill.  It just feels better....

Also, look under "Race Execution" forum, and check out recent race plans from Tim Cronk and Dave Tallo.

Then, write your own detailed race plan, and share it back in the forums for feedback. That's what I'm going to do this weekend.

Here's my #1 tip, for "Bike to Run" bag (T2). Only your shoes (and socks, if you intend to put some one before the shoes) should be loose in the bag. EVERYTHING else should go into a large zip lock bag, to be carried with you out of T2. While starting your run, you can put on you hat/visor, stuff your pills, gels, whatever into pockets, smear or spray on sunscreen, put on sunglasses etc while beginning the run. This not only saves time in T2, but also helps slow you down at the start of your run!

Tip #2: don't go into the change tent either in T1 or T2 , except to run through them (if that's required). Do your stuff outside the tent. These two tips are probably worth 3 minutes over both transitions.

  • Great advice Al, I never thought to run through the transitions and put my stuff on outside (on the other end). Thanks!
