Anyone know how you might generate a HR:Running Pace or HRower curves from your Garmin data either in Training Peaks or other?

That should read HR: Power  curve...

  • Strava does it for Cycling automatically
  • Er sorry that is just power. I will keep looking
  • I was thinking maybe Stava..

To be clear...I don't mean a curve by a particular run...I mean compiled...think of the 6month rolling powercurve with hr layed alongside it...if that makes any sense to anyone...but me.

  • WSM William Jenks constructed a graph of pace vs cadence from Garmin data so it must be possible.
I'll give it some thought and get back to you.
  • Of course, WKO (and TP for that matter) allows power (and pace) vs heart rate for each workout.
I assume you are looking for that data over a number of work outs.
  • I don't know Joseph, HR is really noisy data. Too many external factors like hydration, sleep, fatigue, workout nutrition, glycogen stores, temp, humidity, .....

Do you want AHR per run? per mile? instantaneous? Cardiac drift would be a factor when comparing short (3-4m) runs compared to longer (12-18,). How do you adjust for that?

What about the type of run. A 10 mile steady zone 2 run would be much different in HR response than a 10 miler that had a bunch of hard intervals followed by easy jogging even though the average pace for both may be similar.

For the past 6 or 7 years I've been logging my run times and HR data in a custom spreadsheet that incorporates Joe Friel's TRIMP calculations. I could share one that has a full marathon build of data to see how I have used HR to inform my running if you're interested.
  • There is a WKO chart titled "Avg pace vs Avg HR". Simply shows a line graph connecting the dots representing each run's avg HR and Avg Pace. You can fiddle with how it is presented ...line vs bar, speed vs pace, avg vs max HR, etc. but I dont see a way to create within WKO a custom chart which tracks the rario of Pace to HR of each run over the course of weeks or months.

Why do you want to see this, what are you hoping to learn or possibly improve? That's a question, not a challenge. For me, the ratio of HR to Pace is pretty consistent, once I make an initial 2-4 week ramp up during the start of any training block, like OS. Meaning, given a flat course and a temp < 75F or so, I can pretty much predict what my HR will be at any given pace and vice versa.
  • Steve...would love to see it...

Al...I will have to go back and look at WKO...not sure that I saw that..and ...not sure exactly what I want to see...it was a thought that came to mind over the week...I suppose I wanted to see what correlation existed...potentially see improvement..ie. ...same pace...lower heart rate over time???...

  • I extracted the excel-type data that had second by second recordings of pace and cadence (and all the other things) and made a plot. If I recall correctly, you can do that from training peaks. I don't think you can do it from Garmin Connect. I believe you definitely can from WKO.

What I was trying to plot wasn't accessible from WKO or whatever (at least at that time) because I was accumulating data over multiple workouts too.
  • See if this works... posting Excel workbook with macros.....

  • Lots of macros, linked sheets and hidden calculations.

    Lots to look at.

I went thru the past 6 years of Log files and this one demonstrates the intended functionality the best. Mostly because it it pre-EN and I was run only focused AND I was very good about collecting resting HR, weight, 2 minute recovery HR, and minutes of HR in each zone for each run.

The build included 2 HM races (both were PR's - 5:27 & 0:43) then what was supposed to be my first BQ at the Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately I blew the race (pace and hydration) and bonked/suffered badly. Then 3 weeks later ran Sugarloaf and got the PR & BQ. That PR stood until just last month when I PRed at MDI.

Look it over and ask questions. There is some documentation and helpful buttons different places. As I developed it, I had ideas of people paying me to use it - then reality set in and I abandoned the desire to go public.
  • Hey Joseph, ever take a look at that spreadsheet?
