Tires for HED3 wheels, racing IMAZ this weekend.

AFter 4 flats in RR took to shop and there are cuts in both tires.  Riding HED3 with Vittoria open corsa from Coach Rich's buy.  Shop does not have those.  They have Continental 4000s but only in 25.  They also have Specialized S-Works Turbo.  Looking for recommendations.  Thanks.

  • For the H3 you want to ride 19-20mm tires. Period. Unless you're in a pinch and need a tire fast.

I have used the following when I used H3's:

    20mm Vittoria Open Corsa CX

20mm Continental GP SuperSonic. Currently the fastest tire for the H3 since the Bontrager AeroWing was discontinued. It's kind of a fragile tire though and I would not recommend riding those on the IMAZ roads with those thorns.

20mm Continental GP 4000 (the black version of the 20mm 4000 is the same as the 4000s). I used one of these on my H3 front at IMAZ last year.

A 20mm Conti GP 4000 in black would be my recommendation.
  • What bob said.

If you need to use specialized tires, the turbo pro 23 is fine. Good compromise between fast tire with flat protection.

Not sure about the sworks turbo. The narrowest latest version sworks turbo is 24. The latest version version is as fast as any other tire out there. But i have not used it yet. The latest version just came out so you need to make sure that is what you are getting because the older version is not as fast.
  • I've used the 20mm Continental GP SuperSonic for Ironman races on the h3. Although the above notes that it might be risky (and I should rethink), I try to get two full IMs out of each set. AZ was Race #2 on my set last year.
  • I have a pair of HED 3's and have mixed reviews of them. I love the cool look factor, makes my bike look mean and fast. I love the swooshing sound they make rolling down the road. This is where my love for them ends. I haven't noticed any speed increase and the wind blows me all over the place. I have a mountain that I like to gun down around 50 miles and hour. My first time trying this with the HED 3's I saw my life flash before my eyes. The front end was really shaky and not what I was expecting from such an expensive wheelset. Now, these wheels did come with the bike I bought (Fuji D6), so I have no history of them. Not sure if they are out of true? Do they get out of true? Should I send them into HED for a checkup?  How much would sending them to HED cost?  Is there anything HED could do to fix it?  Is this a good wheel for IMAZ? What type of servicing do they need? If I get said service, would it help with the manageablity of the bike? Right now the HEDs are sitting in the garage and I'm riding on my old trusty aluminums. Thoughts, experiences?
  • Have not had your problem. I did just send mine back to Hed for bearing tuneup. If you have concerns you may want to do the same. They have always been very service oriented.
