Trainer use

Hello Rich,

Was wondering if I should use the trainer to do some of the wk rides that are intervals such as Thursday which is 1.5 mins rides @ vo2 max sessions'? Also on the days that are brick ride/ runs if I do not have time to do both before dark is it ok to do run outside first the do bike on trainer later on that night?

Thanks Chan

  • As far as your first question, absolutely you can use the trainer.  Most of us are banished to the trainer (aka...drainer) all winter.  Trainer is great for intervals, esp VO2 max.

As for the second question, I'm not as experienced as many, but my answer would be that it's ideal to do the run afterwards (learning the feeling of running of the bike and what it does to your RPE vs. pace).  That said, it's better to actually run than not run!  Ie....if the only way you can do it is to run first, that's better than nothing.  Depending on your run, though, it may have effects on your bike intervals.

  • Sorry Chan....didn't notice you intended this for Coach R.....

Yes, trainer is fine and to be expected this time of year.

Fine to do the sessions separate but on that day the bike is more important. Do your best to not have life take that PM trainer ride away. Doing it in the morning usually means that it gets done but you gotta do what you gotta do.
