Kim McKenzie's training zone ???

I did my 3 x 1.5' (zone 4 run) tonight. I am very new to all this data tracking so I might be confused. In the past I have literally just done a workout and whatever time it took I would try to improve the next time but with no consistency or tracking of any sort. I am trying to understand and implement the HR Zones and pace into each workout. Tonight's was the first done on the treadmill.

1) are the same zones used for both bike and run?
2) should I be focusing on my pace during this run (9:20) per calculation (YES I am super slow) OR should I be staying within Zone 4?

I had to drop my pace down to 10"/mile (if treadmill is accurate) to drop my HR. I also had to walk for about 30" a few times otherwise my HR was too high (per the calculations)

I this normal when first figuring all this out? What should I be focusing on?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Kim,

Your training zones for the bike and run are different. For the run, if you are using pace, then stick to the paces regardless of your HR. It is useful to collect the HR data for analysis as this can be used to help your race plan/execution. EN has explored using HR as a basis for pacing the run in an IM, so look in the Wiki for how to use this. For training purposes, pace trumps HR.

Power also trumps HR on the bike if you have a PM. If not, then make sure you complete the HR bike test protocol and calculate your bike HR zones using the EN calculator under the training plan top tab.
  • Keith,  Thank you so much.  This really helps alot.  I did the bike HR test and that is where I came up with my Zones I was trying to use for the run.

I don't have a PM at this point.  I am brand new to EN and trying to absorb all the information I can for my first OS.

    Thank you again.

    Kim

  • No problem. If you want to train with an estimated power before purchasing a powermeter, you could go with trainerroad for $10/month. It gives an estimated power curve based off your trainer, but you'll need a garmin ant+ stick for your computer. you can go to the Wiki and look at how to use trainerroad and there is also a post someplace in the forums. Good luck.
