Goal Race Pace

I'm using the run durability plans ahead of the OS, and I'm not sure what pace I should use as my "goal race pace."

I'm definitely running slower these days than I expect to be running after the OS and when I'm racing.

  • Have you done your 5k vdot test? It should be I believe between midway between Z1 and Z2, as I understand it.
  • It took a little digging, but I found it in a pdf in the Wiki for the 3-year Plan.
"This is the midpoint between your Zone 1 / Long Run Pace and your Zone 2 /Marathon Pace. If your Z1/LRP is 9:00/mile and your Z2/MP is 8:00/mile, then this Goal Race Pace interval will be done at 8:30/mile. This pace is designed to be slightly faster than the pace you will most likely default to on race day. desired pace you are seeking to run on Race Day. For 95% of you, this will be your Zone 1 / Long Run Pace.
  • Brett, when I was figuring it out, I did reverse math to see what I needed to set GRP at. For example, if I thought I should do a 3:45 marathon in the IM, my GRP needed to be 8:30. The idea is to have lots of these type of miles in your legs so that when the race actually comes and you start to suffer, you can just dial in like you have many times before.
  • I asked Coach P this question in the Micro forum and got the same answer as Nemo.
