Changed my plans for 2014. I am going to race imtx and imcoz. With a break in the middle. So really it might look like 2x6mos seasons.

Here is what I am thinking:

2014 season part 1 - Race - IMTX May 17

Start OS Dec 1st. Get 8 weeks in.

Start a 2 week "swim camp" January 26.

Start 14 week IM plan on Feb 9 to end May 17.

After IMTX, the rest of May is rest.

June would be unstructured. I really dont plan to do the local sprints or olys. Maybe the odd group ride but mostly make $ at work and make family a priority. I like crossfit and will be there some during june and july.

2014 Season part 2 - Race - IMCOZ

July 8 starts 10 weeks of outseason

August 17 2wk Swim Camp

August 31 load up 14 week IM plan to end Dec 6.

I get the comments that people had about this making for a long season. But I will just make sure to unplug and reset after TX. This structure seems more palatable to me and an easier fit with my work and home life then racing 2 IM's closer together.

Let me know what you think.

Thx!

  • just got your response to my season planning survey. But I gotta say that I like my plan better. image I have never had a proper outseason and I think that there could be big FTP gains to be made.

    Nope, mine is better

    1. You are very fit right now, post IMFL. Now is the time to leverage that fitness by applying it towards the bike or run.
    2. Just a bad idea to start the OS in December. We've seen over and over again that people who do this end up hitting the reset button on Jan 1, after having trained so inconsistently over the holiday. That consistency is easier to get via the BF or RF plan over the holidays.
    3. The GF plan is a better fit for the fitness you'll have post IM and post Focus Plan, and I need the volume in that plan to give you a headstart towards the IM plan.

Basically, your FP + GF is YOUR flavor of the OS, as a function of the fitness you have now, the fact that we are going into a silly season, and that you're racing such an early season IM.

  • well……

    ok.
    if I have to…
But I am not swimming in december and I might strength train and you can't stop me!

It looks like the run focused is 3x run per week and 2x bike, a swim and a rest day. I think that I have more headway to make on the bike but given the time of year the run focus seems to make more sense. And there will be enough intensity between the RF and GF plans to raise FTP before it is time to stretch out for texas.
I'd also like to brian on my road bike for the next month or so or maybe more. Just to mix it up. Not ready to be on the trainer in aero just yet.
  • Yes, continue to ride outside for as long as you can. And if that's possible, fine to blow off whatever long ride we have scheduled for you and ride ~2.5-3.5hrs if you can. That would be a very valuable session for you to keep rolling as long as you can.
  • I'm moving from gf to IM intermediate plan in prep for IMTx. I have a vacation to Hawaii set for March 7 to 12. I should be able to do a big bike week. But it will be on my road bike (titanium. Lighter. Travels better.). Will I be setting myself back much by being off the trip bike and on the road bike for a week?

Nope, you'll be fine. Have fun!

  • Coach r- I'm looking to schedule the back 1/2 of my season. Heading towards IMtx right now. I am looking at imcoz on nov 30 and was thinking about Austin 70.3 at the end of October.
My question is how well would a 70.3 fit a month out from an IM? How much would it muck up my training for coz? Could I really make A races out of both oft hem that close together?
    Thx!
And btw, if you are ever going to Kauai, don't bother bringing a bike. Roads are tiny and drivers are crazy.

A half that close would be "ok." Not a deal breaker but not ideal either. Are there other races you could do in August or September? I ask because it would be better if you could be in the HIM plan, training for an A-race HIM that's in August or September. Then shift gears and drop into the IM plan for IMCoz.

You're bookending your '14 season with the, literally, the earliest and latest events on the NA IM calendar. In my experience, you're at serious risk of burning out if you're not careful.

  • yea. It has been a bit hard prepping for IMTX. A ton of trainer time. I think that I will plan a later start to race season next year. Being in texas it seemed like one I should race though.
As for a long season, I still plan to treat it like two seasons. Take rest of may and first 1/2 of june unstructured. Then get back to it. I haven't signed up for coz yet. If IMTX goes well, I might skip it. If so, I will do the austin 70.3 for sure. I raced austin 70.3 in 2011 pre en and 2012 post EN and want to see if I can improve.

The IMCOZ is planned as a family beach vacation as well. But if I race IMTX well then I could move the COZ trip a week later and make it strictly vacation.

I guess for now I will just put my head back down and prep my best for IMTX and then reevaluate after it is over.
    THX.

There is an Oly near by on Sept 1. I could take mid may to end of June unscheduled, put in some version of short course or get faster for july and August and then drop in to the last 12 weeks of IM plan for IMCOZ. ?

  • Yes. You'd want to do the GF plan vs the SC plan for that Sept Oly. That's a better workup for the IM plan.
