  • I think I am living proof of why swimming the out-season for "intermediate" folks is unlikely to yield any significant improvement in race day performance.  Coming from ~4yrs of road cycling only, I switched to triathlon in early summer 2012.  Couldn't swim 200yds without having to tread water or switch to breast stroke for a while.  Did my first tri, a sprint, in July 2012...800m swim, probably did 1/3 of it breast stroke....thought I was gonna die.  Came out of the water completely thrashed and had a terrible bike and run (in retrospect, I had NO IDEA what I was doing and no plan).  But, trained and swam the rest of that summer and my next (second) race was Austin HIM Oct 2012.  Did a 40min swim in wetsuit, all freestyle, no problem.  Then trained pretty much year round and raced a spring HIM, several olympic tris in summer, and then did Austin HIM again last month.  After all that training, time, thousands of yards in the pool (most of it using EN workouts as written), and several more OWS, I managed to knock a whole 1 minute off my swim time....39minutes.

Conversely, my bike split improved by >25mins and run by >12 mins!
