Carlos Sanchez Spicy Micro Thread

Hello, we are traveling out of the country all of next week so I wont have access to my bike or pool. I am on the bike plan...shall I focus on running and maybe some strength training?

Please help!

  • @Carlos, I am jealous of your trip....we'll want pics!!! Goal is consistency, simplicity with a sprinkle of core. image

My favorite solution for a general week on the road like your is to alternate the following.

    Day 1 = 45' run with 1 mile at z4/TP/Hard.
Day 2 = 30' run with 4 to 6 sets of strides at the end. Precede this workout with some core, choose from the Strength portion of the Wiki for your routine.

If you need a day off, take it and then pick up where you left off...as I have said before, just coming back healthy and ready to train is more important than getting lots of training in to mess up your trip!!! image
  • Hello, so I was all pumped and ready to go after my trial membership......however.....I just found out that I have a herniated disc at L5/S1, I have started physical therapy but I am essentially grounded for ~ 6 weeks. I can swim and do elliptical, but not running or cycling.
Thoughts? Does this jeopardize my whole season? What can I do in terms of training?
  • Carlos, this is super good you found this out vs pushing through and doing some real damage. Your season isn't in jeopardy, but we have to modify what you are doing right now. Please let me know when you have access to a pool and elliptical and we can sort this out!
  • Hello, i can access a pool and elliptical at any time. Please let me know what works.
  • Carlos, let's step back and keep the broader goals of fitness in mind. I am guessing there are some strengthening exercises you can do to help out; those should be a priority. Also you will have lots of PT work as well, so that will have to fit as well. Finally, we can't have you do anything that might make things worse, so I'd look at consistency vs intensity at this time.

Here is what I am thinking

Mon - Swim - Long Swim day. I would plan on doing Short / Long for variety. So 2 x 100, then 200. 3 x 100, then 300. You can even pull the longer sets. Total time here is 60-70 minutes....again, great strokes not HARD swimming.
Tues - Elliptical - Steady day. Bring the headphones and plan on 45 to 60 minutes of steady carb burning action.
Wed - Swim - Skill Day. This is mostly drills (Swim eBook) with focus on Swim Golf and improved form. No more than 45 minutes.
Thu - Elliptical - Fartlek day. Not hard, just lots of changing paces. So warm up, then repeat 5' intervals as 1' fast, 4' steady. You can work this down to 1' on, 2' off eventually, but take your time.
    Fri - OFF
Sat - Choice Day -- You can swim or elliptcal, we are looking for an hour to 75 minutes of aerobic time here.
    Sun - OFF
  • Hello

So over the last few weeks I have been swimming and using the dreadful elliptical machine. I spoke to my Physical Therapist yesterday and he said he is not sure I will be ready on time for IM 70.3 MTY. He said I can swim, bike (no aero) and water run so I could keep my endurance going. With that in mind, what are your thoughts from a training perspective? I really do not mind not doing MTY, my main goal is to get ready for LP.

    Thanks!

  • Carlos, you are right...getting back on track is more important than "racing" a half at this point. Can you set up a bike to ride in road position? That would be a huge step forward for you...if so, you can do most of your training (even though running is in the water).

What is your PT's timeline for you in terms of getting back? Are you 4 weeks out? 14 weeks? If it's easier to talk this through please call me: (617) 513-3830 Cell Phone (EST Time)
  • Hello, so almost at the end of Week 3 of Physical Therapy.
    Here is my update
I am back to full swing for running and cycling and able to run ~ 3 miles at a time. Still a bit sore on my hip when done but feeling a lot better. I have become a lot more flexible and my core is also stronger.

How can we resume a training plan?
    Appreciate your thoughts.
    Carlos
  • What's the plan re &0.3 Monterrey? Are you skipping? Going to do it for fun? Want to try and ramp up? I don't think #3 is an option but could see #2....I recommend #1, but understand if you have dropped money and are committed...let me know!
  • Dropping mty and focusing on quassy and IMLP. Recovery and building endurance is priority #1
  • hello, just following up on the thread, not sure what next steps are....I assumed you would send an updated training plan for Quassy and IMLP. Am I wrong? Please let me know! Cheers
  • @carlos, if you want a new season plan, you get that by submitting an updated Survey to Coach Rich (under Training link above, I will paste at the bottom). Just putting it here won't get you the right level of support you need!

  • Hello, i submitted my survey early in the week and i have not received an answer yet. Maybe i did something wrong? I hope you can help me.
  • @Carlos, so sorry...I will bump Rich about this now...
  • Hi Carlos,
I process these in bulk 1-2x per week and depending on what day of the week you submit yours, you could get it back right away, or about 5-6 days. I'll doing these today so please look for it in your inbox. Thanks for your patience.
  • Hey Carlos,

Update: I spent yesterday dealing with a broken truck and a breaking down old dog, vet, etc. I'll get this done for you later today or this evening, I have more space carved out after ~2p me. Thanks for your patience.

  • Totally understand...thank you!

  • Question on Big Day T-Pace Test
The pool I use (is still too cold for OWS) is ~15 min from my place. I can't bring my bike with me to the gym. How bad is it, for the purposes of this session, to do the swim at the gym, come home (aprox 20-25min) and then do the bike and the run?

  • That's totally fine, not a problem. It's when its separated by more than an hour or 90 minutes that the actual exercise is compromised.
  • Hello.
I am going to be on Vacation from the 18th to the 24th of may, I will not have access to a bike but I will be in the Caribbean so will be swimming in the ocean. I will be doing a RR with other EN members for the Quassy bike course on the 17th.
What should I do the week I am on vacation to cover for the days I will not be able to ride?

    Thanks!
  • Carlos - swim as much as you can... Can't get enough of that! You can run 45' a day easy, except for log run day as planned. Focus here is on staying in shape, not building new fitness!!
  • I work in the corporate world and I have two little kids that demand a lot of time.
Work hrs are usually from 8 am to 7 pm with really no time to workout in the middle of the day. I am looking at weeks 15 and 16 of the IM training plan and I have no idea how am I going to carve 150 and 180 min to run in the middle of the week.
What are my options? Can I split it into two shorter runs at a higher intensity? Doing them over the weekend obviously does not work as there are long rides there.

I hate to make it look like I lack commitment but with my career is just not possible

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Coach, was wondering if you had any comments about the previous post....thank you

  • Carlos - no worries! In that case we move the long run to Sunday, and the do the Wed ride/run on Tues, FTP run on Wed, then a 90' ABP ride on Thursday in the AM on a trainer. We can totally make it work!!
  • Hello, I texted with coach Patrick about this yesterday but I am not clear yet
I am in week 14 based on IMLP taking place on July 27th and a 20 week plan. Based on that same plan, camp is not supposed to be until week 15, which in this case would be NEXT week.
Problem is, camp is THIS week. So instead of doing week 14 I am following week 15 to get ready for camp. It seems camp was moved forward 1 week.

My concern now is I am going to be done 1 week before IMLP...including tapering. How should I proceed? I do not think I can do week 14 plan next week as I am probably going to be trashed from camp.

    Thanks for your input.

  • Hi Coach, I was looking into the OutSeason Core and Swim Preparation Routine http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/Wiki/tabid/91/Default.aspx?topic=OutSeason+Core+and+Swim+Preparation+Routine

I see there is a plan for The Preparation Phase -- Weeks 1 thru 4 but nothing for Weeks 5 to 16.....it says is under construction

So I guess the question is...is the site being updated? What should I do when I get there?

Also I am not very sure what to do when it says 1 x Catch / 1 x Straight Arm. How many reps per each set?

    Thanks!
  • Carlos – this new addition to the plan was created by Coach Rich, I will have him get back to you here shortly.?

So I guess the question is...is the site being updated? What should I do when I get there? That will be built out by the time you get there. You, and everyone else, should be in OS Wk2 right now so I'll have that done by the time you need to see it.

Also I am not very sure what to do when it says 1 x Catch / 1 x Straight Arm. How many reps per each set? Please read all of the notes on that page and watch the videos. I left the reps out on purpose, because everyone is different.

    Thanks!
