Escape from Alcatraz?

A good friend is the RD for one of the feeder races for Alcatraz and has offered me an unclaimed spot. Feel like this is a bucket list item and is in a place wher I have a hole in my calendar. Aside from the frigid waters, anything I should know? Opinions, thoughts, execution tips?

Cold water was not issue to me. Swimming the correct line is. Pay attn to race talk. The sighting landmarks change as you get to land. Current !!!

Bike. Probably road bike. Careful of sharp turns at hill bottoms.

Best race in the country, if you ask me. Did it in both 2006 and 2007, both in June (this year was moved earlier because of America's cup sailing).

Born and raised in Northern California, I saw views of the city I've never seen, and most people never ever will!

If you go, don't feel pressured to book the super expensive hotels near the piers. There are some hotels pretty close to the Presidio that are all within walking distance of the race start/finish area.

Not feeling excited as I should. Basically an OLY for $2000 total cost... Decided not this year, can prob get the entry through my friend in ensuing years, with 2IMs on the schedule for '14 gotta conserve.

Going to train with Al T in snomass in September instead anyone care to join?
