Garmin 510 Questions

I recently bought the Garmin 510 and it seems like a great unit. Prior to this I was using the Joule 2.0.

My question is around NP calculations. It seems that the 510 takes a while to “catch up” with NP to the effort. EG if I ride on my trainer with 3sec average power at 230-240 trying to have an effort of 231 for the interval, it seems to take5 or so minutes (longer sometimes) for NP to catch up to the 231.

Not such a big deal when doing longer intervals 8, 10, 20, etc... but when doing VO2 intervals, clearly the garmin won't show the work effort (i havent looked at the file downloads yet0

wondering if others with this unit are having the same experience or perhaps i have selected the wrong data to view?

  • I have the same issue with the Garmin 500. Driving me nuts.
  • NP is a mathematical rolling average formula using a time frame prior to the interval in the average (I think 30 seconds) therefore giving you a delayed number and usually a smaller number than AP on a shorter interval.... NO Biggy just use AP for short intervals.... No a Garmin or Joule issue is just the way NP is calculated....
  • ^^What Tim said.

This was also discussed on Nov 8th and Nov 9th in a different thread, so you are not alone in this confusion: http://members.endurancenation.us/Forums/tabid/57/aft/12578/Default.aspx

I use trainerroad for most of my workouts and just try to keep the power above the "goal" for my VO2 stuff. If I were using the 510 (or 500) for these I would just look at the 3s power number and try to keep it above your goal the whole time for the ON sets. Don't sweat the minutae, just do the work.
