How does the NYC lottery work?
Can someone explain to me how the NYC marathon lottery works? I see it starts on 4/7. We're flying to Paris 4/7 - 4/8 and want to be sure if there is a response window I can make it.
Thanks!

Not sure which situation you're in, see the two options below.
1) Sorry, you just missed it! Lottery entry was Nov 3rd to March 15. Try for 2011.
or
2) Are you talking about if you win a lottery spot that you already applied for? If you win a spot when they do the drawing, they charge the credit card you used to apply and you're in - period, done deal. No need to worry about responding if you're traveling abroad. You can defer your winning entry, but you'll need to pay again for guaranteed entry the next year. You'll usually see the charge on your credit card before you get the email or log in to the website to confirm. So, no charge on card = no spot. Charge on card = you're in yippie!!! Good Luck, hope to see you in NYC on Nov 7th.
It was June 4th last year. I believe they moved it to up April 7th this year (as per http://www.nycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/apply.htm) because they started the lottery entry much earlier. You'll get an email letting you know either way, but you'll see they charge on your credit card statement first if you're selected. You can also probably log in to the profile site on the 6th and see if you're selected.
Temper tantrum warning. . . . .
I'm ticked. Really, really ticked. I'll be even more ticked come April 7 to find that I got a slot in NYC. Why? Because the American Dietetic Association conference is in Boston that weekend, and I have official duties I have to fulfill there. I was thinking I'd just do NYC if I got in. No big deal. If I didn't get in, I'd start tri training again. But, now that I can't do it, I want to do it! I'm going to lay on the floor, hold my breath, and beat my arms and legs for a few minutes before I resume being an adult (OK, kind of an adult).
Temper tantrum over. . . .kind of. . . . .
Does that mean I shouldn't wish you good luck any more?
If you "get in", and you can't "do it" this year, I believe you can defer your entry for up to 3 years.
Cary: I'll take all the good luck I can get. If I get in, I'll defer. Something to keep me motivated.
Penny, if you are coming to boston we should hook up. Love to meet you and my wife who is a weight watchers leader would love to as well.
Good Luck in Paris and NYC lottery.
@Penny, good luck in Paris - have some culinary fun too!
Guess that means a big fat NO for me this year.
Looks like Aaron Smith got in though, per his FB posting.
I'm 1-3 so far with the lotteries this year. YES: Alcatraz (although I was unable to take it), NO: Leadville and NYC marathon.
Hopefully kona will be kinder next week!
I'll be there (I got in via 9+1 program).
I got in! I got in! I got in! . . . I have to defer. I have to defer. I have to defer.
I signed up before I realized I have a meeting that same weekend that I can't miss. So, Yea! Bummer! What mixed feelings.
We are in the airport about to catch our flight to London then to Paris. Got to be sure I can get through that one OK before looking at more. . . Aurovoir!
Have a great run in Paris!!!
@Scott - today is my first day Back in flip flops after IMLP. I had a no flip flop rule for 2 weeks prior to the event as I wanted to protect my feet. Dont worry, all weekend in Placid I sported checkered vans that provided comfort and style I require
I can probably do late Friday evening or early Saturday evening. Sunday afternoon is out for me as I will probably keep running right from the finsih to the subway to the airport again like last year.
Matt, Tucker I've created a new thread for this so we may attract more people:
