wko4

Training peaks has had a bunch of webinars on the new updates.  they total four hours.  I tried about fifteen minutes of the first one and was ready to head for the exits--Coggan is a good writer, and I'd prefer to obtain the bottom line in print.  The hype is that they're introducing new metrics on power that have possibly significant practical application.  That's the next webinar on the 18th.  But does anyone have a back-of-the envelope explanation of what they're up to?

  • I've been listening all day while working on some mundane editing/data entry.

First he spends time talking about his creds as a modeler and research guy. Then goes on to look at different models and how they function and where they fall short. By episode 3 he introduces some new metrics and demonstates how well they work which are the basis for WKO4.

Part way thru episode 4 now but having trouble paying attention since my work got more tedious.

** beginning at 3:30 into episode 4 he refers to EN, Rich and how we use TSS as a metric for targeting a good bike in IM. **

Personally I think they really stepped up with this new version and can't wait to get a copy.
  • I listened to the first three. As a "professional lecturer" (both he and I), I agree he has some things to learn. He spends 3 hours telling you what mathematical modeling is and simplifying it down to looking at residuals. Then he spends some time legitimately showing a bunch of different fitting models and their shortcomings (legit, but he takes way too long and adds too much editorial comment for my taste...but he's the one personally involved), and then he introduces his new model and tells you that he won't tell you exactly what it is for proprietary reasons.

The truth is, I think he has one REALLY GOOD 1 hour lecture in there. If there is demand for it, I can do a "translation" into a paper doc, but I obviously didn't take the time the first time through.

I am also looking forward to the software and plan to buy a copy, in no small part because it's going to mac native.

One thing he addresses is the shortcoming of the current models at the long and short ends of the time frames. It does look like he has a new parameter set that fits things very well. It will be very interesting to see if the new model deals well with slow cyclists on the IM. This is a clear major failing of the current FTP/TSS model.

    Yes please.

  • William a "translation" would be awesome!!

I loved his book but I will NOT EVER listen to a 1.5h podcast ... NO image
