Pulled something, need advice!

I posted this in the OS forum but thought I might repost here to see if anyone else has advice.

So, my bike work out started awesome...warmed up and started hitting all my targets right on key! THEN....as I was about to hit my 8th interval, I felt a PULL in the back of my knee!!!! I slowed and tried to ride it out....tried to pick it up again and had pain  slowed again.....tried one last time and again, pain   Got off the bike.  I don't know what I did!!! It feels fine now, and I don't feel it when I walk, only when I was riding.  I am so upset, I pray I did not do something serious.  Does anyone know what I could have pulled? It is behind my knee. I'm in need of staying positive right now because I am freaking out.

  • Ice it down tonight. Rest day is tomorrow, so you can ice and rest it. See how it feels on Saturday. May be some inflammation around your hamstring tendons.

  • Relax. My gut says politeus strain. Did your cleat slide forward? Heavy resistance for hard short intervals? You may have overloaded the hamstring/calf and the popliteus tried to help and wammo.

Roll your calf and hamstring and get ball in proximal calf and posterior knee and try to release it. Or get in to see someone who can do this with their thumbs.

    You can fix this.
  • Thank you Carrie and Jan. I really appreciate your posts.  I am icing it now and just finished rolling out.  @ Carrie- I am not sure about using a ball because I am not sure where to place it...I wouldn't know exactly where to target to release it (and now I am just afraid of doing something to it). And I made the mistake of using Google....WILL NOT DO THAT AGAIN!

  • Did the area bruise? Is it swollen? Can you pinpoint the pain with your finger or a certain movement? Does the pain travel, burn, throb.... Etc?

You can also look up the term trigger point. When we overload a muscle we can activate them and they cause pain. We need to treat them with pressure to turn them off.

Just ideas I am thinking. If you had no pain at all leading into this workout and then wham - it is likely a strain. Much more palatable word than pull ;-).

  • @ Carrie- no bruising and not swollen. Hamstrings feel tight this morning but there is no pain.  I haven't hopped back on the bike to see if the pain is still there. The only time I felt it was when I was riding (specifically when pushing down).  It was a sharp type pain.  I iced last night.  I will be hopping on the bike tomorrow morning with hops of completing my 90 minute ride. If I feel the pain, I will note exactly where it is. I hope it is a strain and not a pull! THANK YOU for all the info! It's no surprise to me that you have a WSM status

  • Glad you hear no bruising, swelling and only feels tight.

This is a great time to review your maintenance plan - do you stretch, roll and do these things along with a warm up before your workouts? Do you do hip, knee, ankle ROM and stabilization exercises? Anyway- my point is- having an owie is a great reminder to do all the other things that maintain our bodies to do these hard workouts.

Look at all of this as a positive thing. Try not to only focus on Saturdays 90 min set. If you drag this owie out further then you delay your recovery and future potential. Training pain free is our goal. Your pain will dictate your Saturday.

The out season is a very hard program. Be careful.
  • Carrie- You are so right about tuning into my maintenance plan.  I do not stretch enough or roll enough.  This is a wake-up call for me!  What are some hip, knee, angel ROM stabilization exercises? I would love to get into a routine of doing that.

Positive thing- I rode yesterday, and did not feel that same pain behind my knee! My hamstring is still tight/sore.  I need to work on getting it fixed.  Thank you so much for your help!! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!
