Sunglasses

Good news! My  mother-in-law called me today and said she would like to buy me a pair of sunglasses for Christmas, but wasn't sure what to get. (My husband must have told her I use Target $15 glasses that fog up, are usually too dark for when I ride, and I end up wearing them in my shirt not on my face). Anyways, I am looking for feedback on what brand/type of sunglasses you use! I was thinking about looking for a Fototec lenses because my rides (when outside) are usually early morning, when the amount of sunlight changes quickly (and new england weather can change quickly and it can go from super cloudy to sunny!). Anyone willing to share their gear and experiences is appreciated!!

  • Laura - two recommendations. High end -- I love my Rudy Project NOYZ w/ photochromic lenses. Lower end -- Tifosis. I love my Slips...and think they now come in a photochromic lens as well.
  • I like the Tifosis too.  At the high end, I've used the Smith Optics Pivlock V2.  I like them because they are frameless, so they work good in the aero.  There's no frame bar across your field of vision when you are down on the extensions.  I also like them because they are windshield-like (cover the whole field of view), which is important in the rainy funtime of the Pac NW.  They come with three interchangeable lenses so you have options based on conditions.  They don't really fog at all.

  • Forgot to mention that I have started wearing some of the XX2i "Readers" on the bike; their only downside is that they don't have photochromic lenses.
  • x2 on the Smith Pivlocks -- I have the V90 Max ones-- I love to switch out the lenses-- they have never fogged up on me and I love them!  I actually use the "Ignitor" lens for changing conditions-- much like my ski goggles, I need lenses for changing conditions, and the "Ignitor" lens (rose-colored) is my go-to for those conditions.  If it's just gonna be bloody hot and sunny, I use the gold type lens, and I have used the clear lens for the miserable condition days.  I have a big face and head and a giant forehead-- so that's why I use the max, you may want to check out the V90 regulars if you're just regular-sized.  image

Well, well worth the price if sunglasses are important to you.  They are to me, as they also double as a headband and my most-used accessory.  And truthfully, I think they make me look bad-ass.

  • What about Oakley Radar Locks???
  • Tifossi Vogel. rimless, great for being in aerobars, Fototec too.
  • I use both Tifosi fototec and Smith Pivlock. Iprefer the Pivlock, as the clarity of vision (ie, quality of theoptics) is outstanding. Rimless at thetop is essential for riding in TT position
  • I'll admit it, I have a fat head ("it's like sputnik", to quote one of my favorite movies), and over the recent years the only sports glasses that work for me are the Oakley Jawbones. Have two sets, one white framed and the other red/black, with interchangeable lenses. Gotta match my kits, ya know?!?

First heard about them from Rich at the EN Tour of Cali camp in 2010, and haven't looked back.

For smaller-headed peeps, they don't work so well; but for me and my fat-headed brethren I wouldn't suggest anything different!
  • I used to be a huge fan of my jawbones and still use them for short distance stuff. For whatever reason, on my last Ironman they gave me the worst headache ever. The bottom bracket did it for some reason. I guess its thickness and the sun and long bike mileage. Never happened in training rides for some reason but come race day they killed me
