Hip Pain

I have recently been experiencing pain on the front of my hip/ right side of pelvis. It flares up on occassion during work out but mainly I experience it when standing up or getting out of my truck. It does not feel like a muscle has been pulled and the pain does not last more than a few minutes. I have tried stretching it and strengthening it but have had no luck.

Any thoughts?

  • I get this kind of thing pretty often. I've had it treated by PT's, an acupuncturist and a myofascial massage therapist. The answer is always always one of two things: either the psoas muscles are all knotted up on the bad side or the quadratus lumborum. (Pardon my technical language, but I figure you could google these muscles if you need to.)

I've learned how to release my psoas muscles myself. They're basically in the front of your abdomen, towards the sides, and pretty deep in there. It's a lot cheaper and easier than scheduling (and paying for) a visit whenever I get a flare up. I also have all the gizmos from tptherapy.com, and these are helpful for releasing tight muscles. I use the round ball against a wall to work on my QL whenever it gets tight. For the psoas, I just use my fingers.

Let me know if you need additional info. Without self-maintenance of these muscle groups, I wouldn't be doing much training at all.
