Race Positioning Question

Hi Rich,

I'm racing Challenge AC as my A race this year.  I'm going to race a 70.3 first week of May.  You already have this race in my schedule.  My question is should I look to add another tri late May, early June for a prep race prior to Challenge?  I live 30 minutes from Rev3Quassy and I've done both the Olympic and 1/2 in the past.  Tough race to ride/run so not sure that would be a good idea.  Let me know your thoughts.  Thanks.  Pat

IMO, an early June half is to close to Challenge AC, which is June 29th. You'll be in your most critical IM volume phase, race rehearsals, stuff like that. Not an ideal time to race.

  • Hi Rich,

I'm finishing the get faster program this week and will start IM training for Challenge AC on 4/7.  Week 8 of Get Faster is a light week do to testing.  Do you suggest I start IM training a week early?  I ask because I travel almost every week, yet don't have to travel this coming week.  This coming week is a particularly good week for me to train.  On the other hand, I haven't tested in a while and should update my zones.   Thanks.  Pat

  • Pat,

Move over to the IM plan but take the tests from GF Wk8 and do them this week, in your IM plan. Important that we capture any training zone / fitness changes now, at the start of your IM plan, as test is very infrequent in the remainder of the IM plan.
  • Hi Rich, I have my HIM A race this Sunday.  Patrick is helping me with the workouts for this week.  I need to travel for business M-Th.

Can you guide me to the recovery route I should follow for next week.  The page on the site talks about being recovered for the long run on Sunday but I'm doing my long runs on Thursday.

    Thanks.  Pat

Pat, have you read this doc? The short answer is that post HIM, you'll move that Thurs long run to Sunday, so that it's separated from your HIM by as many days as possible and so can be done per your training plan (same volume, intensity, etc)

  • Thanks for clarifying Rich.  I did read the DIY but thought it might have been outdated since it talked about the long run being on a Sunday.  All set now.  Thanks.  Pat
  • Great, good luck!

    Hi Rich,

I sent the same note to Patrick.  I know you like short notes.  This isn't one of them.  Thanks for your help!!

Race update:  Raced a NJ local 70.3 yesterday.  5:18 total time.  39 swim, 2:47 bike, 1:50 run.  Not a PR for me but probably the most consistent 1/2 IM I've ever done.  I'm not a great swimmer so 39 is good for me.  My new quarq PM didn't work at all on the bike!!  Not sure why.  I synched it prior to leaving transition.  I need to figure this out.  I was really looking forward to riding between 215-230 watts steady the entire time.  Regardless, I stayed in the aerobars for 99% of the time and kept saying ride the bike I should, not the race I could.  I  must have said that 300 times on the bike!!  My watch and bike said I averaged 20.5 mph.  Extra time was putting on armwarmers/booties to start due to it being cold. MP for me is 8:00.  Ran steady each mile, walked 30s after each of the first 3 miles and then was able to run 8:10 pace for miles 4-8.  Miles 9,10,11 I struggled a bit and pace slowed to 8:50.  Last mile+ I woke up and kicked a final 8:00 pace.  For early May, especially with my travel schedule, I'm pleased with this result.  Thanks to you and Rich for the coaching.  Two months to Challenge AC.  Fastest IM is 12:30 at LP two years ago.  If I stick to the program, I can break 12.

Off to Houston, Austin, MSP back home Thursday night.  Good that this week is a recovery week.  I'll get the sessions in and be ready to go long bike, run on Saturday, Sunday.

    Thanks again.  Pat

    Hey Pat,

Congrats on the great result! HIGHLY recommend you write a race report and post it in the Race Report forum, with any questions you have, for the team to offer you their input.

  • Thanks Rich.  I didn't know there was a Race Report Forum.  I'm clearly showing my rookie status.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Hi Rich, I hope you're doing well.  I'm checking on the race kits.  I'm racing Challenge AC in 13 days and would love to race in EN gear.  Brenda shared that race kits would be mailed this week.  Not sure if this is confirmed.  Issue I have is I'm at our home in CT until Saturday, 6/20 and then we move to our beach house on 6/21, close to where Challenge is being held.  If the kit has already mailed, I'm sure I'll get it before we leave on Sunday.  IF not, maybe it's best for it to be mailed to OC.  Let me know about shipping when you have a minute.  Thanks.  Pat
  • Hi Pat,
The kits shipped today to Brand Evolutions in Ohio. They will receive them on Wednesday and begin shipping them out. Probably best if you contact them directly to change your shipping address: cs@brandevolutions.com
