Helmut Advice

I'm a newb looking to buy my first aero helmut.  There seems to be a discount right now at Rudy.  Anyone have some guidance as to which one makes the most sense?  I know nothing about helmets.  At this point I was looking at the "wingspan time trial helmut".  Still can't get the discount without the VIP code but it seems Brenda is working on that.  Also, how do you order a helmut based on size without trying it on???

  • I just looked at the wingspan too. Unfortunately the two decent colors only come in small. They're out of every other size.
  • Giro Air Attack w visor ... stub tail aero helmet, $240. Replacing the Lazer Tardiz for me, which replaced the Spiuk. Yes, I now have 3 aero helmets.

Advantage, you can wear it as your regular helmet and hardly anyone will know the difference. Stub tail aero is the latest wrinkle for TT riders on the Pro circuit, especially for long rides with lots of head movement ( can you say IM?)
  • Al I am with you on the Air Attack awesome helmet and you don't look silly with it on.
  • what size are you Craig? For the cost of shipping I can send you one if you fit a medium. I have several that I have bought and never used. Personally I hate them. I only use one if it is cold .They are ovens to me..

  • If I were to buy an "aero" helmet right now I would get a Specialized Evade, Giro Air Attack or Kask Bambino (which I have).
  • Wow that's really nice of you Ray,  I'll have to look at my current helmut to see what size it is.  It just has one of those adjustable head straps inside. Or I'll check one out at my local cycle shop for sizing.  I'll pay you shipping plus...I can't take it for free.  Let me check it out and get back to you.  Everyone seems to agree thats the helmut of choice.

    Thanks everyone!

  • Glad to Craig. I am your not so secret Santa. I have a specialized and a gyro advantage with the visor. They are both brand new.
  • I would also consider the Bell Javelin...its great...I switched from the Giro Advantage....benefits are shorter tail...great airflow..sheild or shieldless..

  • I was just checking out the Rudy-Project Wing57 which looks like their successor to the Wingspan which I have and like. Looks pretty cool.

  • +1 on the Giro Air Attack with visor. I use it as my everyday helmet without the visor and then slap the visor on for race day.

Jim Manton at ERO Sports has stated in the past that he has not yet tested a helmet that was faster with the visor on, Air Attack included.  FWIW.
