Bruised hip is apparently nothing to laugh at

So 11 days ago I finally got my new clip in pedals on my mountain bike and went for a ride with a friend. The pedals worked great, but my gears did not and I fell 5 times. I laughed them all off, and had sore ribs the next day from landing on a log.

Then 2 days later, I switched mountain bikes (OK stole my hubby's mountain bike that is only used to ride beside me on long runs...yes, I am lucky) and no more falls. Well, almost. I managed to bust it bad as my tire hit a slippery root and I hit hard on a rocky surface with my right hip. After first thinking I had shattered it ( I am a 51 year old female with a mom who has osteoporosis), I was delighted that it was only bruised. I really enjoyed the badge I wore that week and disappointed that I could show it only to my husband as it was 13 inches long by 3 inches wide, but all in a very well covered area. My riding partner is also my doctor, so I chanced it and sent him a half way porn picture of my hip/butt. He said I must have had hit the bursa and it was probably filled with blood, and I better be stretching it or months down the road an x-ray would show calcification and decreased range of motion. I tried getting on my foam roller, but that nagging rib won't let me. I am using the stick, but not sure its helping. I am able to exercise (run and cycle), and I did some yoga stretches which I am terrible at even on a good day. Today I feel a line of scar tissue and then a knot of scar tissue right over the joint. my question is, should I go to my PT, who will absolutely kill me with Graston? I just finished months of it for a soleus problem that I swear would have been better regardless. I've got nothing big coming up, I am in a run durability block and will go to JOS soon. Your thoughts are desired!

  • Ouch! I would suggest seeing a PT, though I am one so I might be biased. Are you still bruised/swollen? If so, a PT could actually use kinesiotape to pull the swelling out. I am personally not a huge fan of kinesiotape, but for swelling/bruising, I LOVE it! If you want to try foam roll at home, instead of rolling on it yourself, have you husband roll it on your leg. He can grade the amount of pressure, and that way it shouldn't hurt your ribs. Since this is still pretty new, I think some gentle massage could probably do the trick without going in the Graston direction, though I'm saying all this over the internet. But yes, I would recommend going to a PT, better than later regretting that you didn't! And again, ouch!
  • Thanks, Rachel. My husband agrees, so I will go to our PT.
