How Do You Decide to Take 1, 2, or 3 Days Off? Here's What Amanda Lovato Does

There is talk of great fatigue here in many different threads and forums. Our own KrisF sent me this link to Amanda Lovato's blog where she describes how she guages her fatigue, and the need for rest.  Amanda describes her parameters for deciding to take 1, 2, or 3 days off. Here the link to her blog Hear Me Roar. And, I'm sure her photos will be enjoyed by many.

She says:

One of the most important aspects of racing and training for me is my recovery. While I'm not injury prone, I do tend to get VERY, VERY tired....

Amen. Do I hear her on that!

  • Holy cow! This is mighty timely. in the last week I have fallen in several of those categories....and have been so utterly exhausted. Forced rest this weekend made a huge difference. Now if only I can get better at anticipating the need for the rest before I implode.
  • 7 out of 10 symptoms for three days off? I thought I got a little grumpy when tired, I would be truly frightened being around her!

  • Nice link. I'm working on a post regarding this very issue and why we in EN are so prone to burnout, especially during the OS. Stay tuned.

LOL! I think lots of people here (count me in in the past) would have 10 out of 10 to the 10th degree before being convinced that time off is good. image

  • Her list is fantastic! And, yeah, I have to remember to take days off way before I usually think I do.

  • I'm sorry...was there text on that blog? I didn't see any...

    You dawg.

  • Folks please remember we do cover this in the wiki (how to stand down) and there are plenty of threads here. At the end of the day, fatigue and your tolerance for it are incredibly personal. What makes Mancona stronger, for example, would kill most of us. There is no one answer, only the answer that's best for you...sounds like Amanda has developed a pretty good system for managing her fatigue...what's yours?

  • Thanks for the link, Linda! It dovetails very nicely with the recent EN wiki of How to standdown. The fatigue is quite insidious--if we're not looking for it, it will run us over like a freight train. I know I'm not alone in being an expert on how to overtrain and overextend.
  • One of the best takeaways things abt Amanda's blog is the fact that she has learned to recognize and interpret the signals her body and mind are sending. Not to mention, she has a great sense of humor!!!
  • Just looked at the link. Great info there, real life stuff. I can sooo relate to the "angry" part!!

And the crying part--as I remember myself on the side of the road, bike thrown, and sobbing.

  • and you were right about the pictures.....
  • What I take from it is:

    - Yes, great to see how she handles burn-out as a Pro athlete.
    - Yes, despite having a freakish athletic ability she's human like the rest of us - especially as her job is to train & REST!
    - Think we also have to remember she is a Pro however and personally I'd much rather hear about how a top age-group working Mum copes with fatigue and burn-out - just my take.
