OS and early races.

I have been listening to a few POD cast here in EN and thinking about some races for 2014.

Since my OS is January I will complete it in April. I was looking at a few races I want to hit as spring and summer approaches. I have a habit of doing too much so I want to ask all ya'll for some input.

I'm doing SC through out the year with a maybe 1/2 IM in Sept here in NJ... maybe. As I will be exiting the JOS in April what do you think of my entering a Oly in May 4th? Looks to soon for me as I would mess up my OS by my doing too much to soon.

I was looking at another Oly in June 8, that would be 7 weeks outside the OS training peroid not much time for a full SC plan however exiting the OS how trained are we to be able to jump into races and what does that race distance look like i.e. sprints, Oly or HIM?

  • I think the OS is great prep for SC and if the race is after the OS, you should be fine. I would submit a season plan request to coach Rich and he will lay it out for you and give you some input as well. You definitely don't need a full SC plan after the OS to do an Oly.
  • Last year I did the January OS with the only modification being that I started swimming the first week of April a couple of weeks before the OS ended. I then did ~4 weeks of the HIM plan before my first race on May 17-19 which was the American TTT (a weekend race featuring TWO Olympic-distance races on Saturday followed by a half-iron on Sunday…all on a very challenging course).

I felt the OS did more than enough to prepare me for the early-season race and so this year I'm going even more extreme with this training approach – I signed up for 70.3 Florida on April 13 which I intend to race based on OS training plus 7 weeks of swimming.
  • Matt knows what he's talking about, unlike me who apparently forgot that swimming is part of triathlon, but not part of the OS. image

What I should have said is OS is fine for SC prep, if you add some swimming.
  • David -- just add in some swimming in the last 4-6 weeks of the OS and you'll be more than ready to have a good Oly race in early May. I've done 3 OS with EN and after all three I've felt like I was ready to set a PR in an Oly.  I think the OS is great for getting a person ready to have an awesome bike and run in an Oly.

+1 ... as long as you swim a couple days a week with some hard/fast stuff at least once a week during the OS. The run and bike wkos in the OS are PERFECT for racing 1.5/40/10 km
