Compression socks/leggings for flight

Howdy!

Got a over seas flight coming up.  Flight over leaves Wednesday, arrives Thursday.  Marathon on Sunday.  I'm thinking compression socks/tights might be good for the flight.  Anyone have thoughts?

Edited to update flight schedule.

Comments

  • Absolutely! I tuck my compression socks in my backpack and put them on at the beginning of the flight (or sometimes I just wear them all day).
  • Sounds like a good plan to me.

I have been wearing compression socks a lot the last few months. I hate running or riding in them but find them great for travel, sitting at my desk, standing at bars etc. They are comfortable and seem to make a differnce in how my lower legs feel. I used to get a throbby achey thing going while traveling or sitting at my desk on days I ran long, now not so much.

  • I was on a flight from Chicago to Dublin the day after the Chicago Marathon two years ago. I put on full tights before leaving my house and took them off when I checked into the hotel the next day ... Highly recomend it as I probably would not have been able to walk otherwise.
  • Love my Skins compression tights for exactly that reason!

  • Every flight I take over 1 .5 hrs I have them on.  Trips last year to England and to China they were on and made a MAJOR difference in comfort during the flight and post flight.  YES wear you compression tights! No doubt in my mind.

  • Yes, yes, and yes. I used them after sunday's 19 miler and the monday AM flight. Worst part about compression socks is taking them off... image
  • Does anyone remember the discount place that was discussed last year to get them? I'm debating between socks and tights now. . . .More thoughts/recommendations?

  • Couple of thoughts.

    • If you aren't planning on wearing them in a situation where you'll be sweating, go to the local CVS/RiteAid/Walgreens, and buy a cheap pair made by Futura.  They're around $12.  They aren't made from wicking materials, but they do the job just fine.  Make sure to go for the high compression ones (>20mmHg)
    • If you'd like a wicking fabric (and it can be a benefit, as I know my feet get sweaty on long flights), there are some generic type socks out there that would do the trick.  One is here for $16.
    • If you'd like to get something that's marketed at the tri market, take a look at the DeSoto calf sleeve ($36 at TriSports).  Otherwise, most of the products all seem to be in the $50 range (which feels steep for a pair of socks).

Someone was doing a group buy of compression socks back in November/December, but my search is a bit weak this morning.  Don't think it's still available, though.

On the tights side, Skins, 2XU, and Zoot all make compression tights (that I'm aware of).  I have a pair of the Skins "Travel and Recovery" Tights, and really love them.  All of those products are up in the $100 range.

    Good luck!

  • I think I just answered my own question. In the archived forum, there are some great discussions on compression tights/socks. Here is one that talks about the different amounts of compression: http://www.endurancenation.us/en_forums/showthread.php?t=4319&highlight=compression

Here is the company that makes Zoot's so you can get Zoot without the name and markup: http://www.kmeleon.ca/#

After a little reading, I think I'll go to Walgreens or a medical supply store and get some super sexy support hose in the 15 - 20 mmHg range and maybe some socks, too. I'm not looking to wear them in public but under clothing on the flight and after the race. Much cheaper than buying the name brand ones.

  • Just to give a plug for Kmeleon which is the company Linda referred to back in the 3.0 forum.

I just got off the phone with them to order some compression shorts and capris, that's right, I'm gonna wear capris.

I asked about the old discount code Linda referred to, instead, they gave me wholesale price.  I asked if I could share it with my triathlon team and they said yes, but to be aware they don't market these as triathlon products due to contractual obligations with Zoot for whom they make their compression products.

Does this mean we can start a new "Like Halligan" thread?  LOL!

Just this January I ran WDW Marathon and had to fly out the same day, at about 4pm. I know this breaks every tenet of recovery (and common sense) but if I didn't fly out on Sunday the next flight wasn't until Thursday, days I couldn't get off from work. You better believe I was wearing my compression socks (2xu), but all the socks and water in the world couldn't save me the next day. I woke up middle of the night due to the pain and definitely was restricted to a hobble the next day.

Anyway though, thanks for the Kmeleon link, was there an actual coupon code, or did you just call direct for the wholesale price?

  • Trevor,

I asked about the coupon and after discussing a few things, he just gave me the wholesale price.
