Front Der: What ''size''?

So, I'm putting some new components on. 

Next is the front der.  And, I'm stumped as to what ''size'' is appropriate.  I don't recall needing to know this before.  Braze on vs Clamp?  Understand the difference.  But, the size of the der?  Nope.  Is this a double vs triple vs compact chainring issue?

    I think it's in reference to Clamp On fd's. And the different sizes mentioned are specific to fitting around a bike's seat tube. So, if I'm picking up a braze on for my Specialized Transition, this is a moot point.

    Just wanna be sure.
