Garmin 910xt Not Showing Distance/Technique Data in Pool Mode

Went for a swim this morning at my local YMCA (indoor pool).  I set my 910xt to indoor pool mode, set the pool length (25 meters) and hit start.  For some reason it wasn't capturing any distance or swim technique data - none at all.  The only data element I got was time.

When I downloaded the activity to Garmin Connect I noticed that there was a map with crazy GPS data.  Does the GPS not switch off in indoor pool mode?  And is that reason I got no distance/technique data?

The horror...I had to resort to counting laps this morning!!

  • Sounds odd. Whenever I set mine into pool mode (which is an outdoor pool for me) it just does its thing and I haven't ever noticed it having GPS data. When I've done open water swimming with it, yes the GPS is on, but doesn't seem as accurate. Of course, that just might be because my distances are pretty small so the error seems bigger image.
  • GPS should have automatically been turned off in pool mode.... Must have missed it or it somehow defaulted back to OWS mode... Did you use the lap feature at all? Have you swam laps with the 910 before? I absolutely love mine (because I cant count) currently I'm swimming in a odd size pool 101' so I am in the custom lap mode set at 33yds and its working fine.... http://connect.garmin.com/activity/421975383
  • Agree with Tim,  no problem with mine even at custom lengths.  One question though, I seem to remember reading about some issues in the Garmin forum the early software releases and some swim features,   You probably already have  I would check to make sure you have the latest firmware updates.
  • Yep, GPS should be off in indoor pool mode. Tim: WTH - 101 feet?!?

I had a similar problem with mine maybe 3-4 times and it seemed that was in instances where I left it on the charger after a run, it transmitted the run data and powered ITSELF off while in the process of transmission.  The following AM at the pool it didn't capture laps correctly and the data was otherwise all jacked.  It could be coincidence, but now I make sure to fully power it off and then back on pre-swim.  Also, it may be they fixed this with an update and I'll never know the difference because I haven't had the issue lately.

Bummer not to get your swim data *** precious data *** insert Gollum voice here....

    Good luck!

  • The only other thing i can think of is to always reset/save your previous workout to history before starting your swim.  The 910 will let you move from a run to a swim without resetting.  Doing this shouldn't matter because when it's in pool mode it "should" turn off GPS, but double check that just to be sure.

  • Thanks for the feedback y'all!

I've got the latest & greatest firmware so I'm good there. And since this is the first time this has happened maybe it's just a fluke. I'll do a hard reset before my next swim and see if it behaves properly.

@Jenn - yeah...there was a great big sense of "fail" when I realized my precious data was MIA. Very, very sad....
  • I wanted to close the loop on this.

I think I figured out what happened here. On my next swim the watch worked fine. On the swim after that I manually turned off the GPS on the watch and then set it to swim and the problem was replicated (i.e. swim with no data other than time). I turned the GPS back on; switched it back to swim mode and behold I got my swim data.

So I think my problem was related to my turning the GPS off and then going to swim mode.
