November Outseason Transition To......

I know I know there are four weeks left . However I am anal and like to plan. What is the best way to transition into the next plan?

I keep debating whether it is time to dust off the TT bike NOW to get ready for the Half IM plan. This means new FTP tests though cause I am slower on the tri bike.

I will likely do a lot of the next plan (95%) still on the trainer. Curious what others do.

Same with the run, I did all of my workouts on the treadmill except the 4 road races I ran. I will likely stay on the treadmill.(quality dog time).

Any easy time in between OS and the next plan?

Anything wrong with doing a hack of the plans and doing the Jan OS?

My schedule is contingent on shoulder surgery recovery so I am either doing several 70.3's and 2 to 3 Full IM's or I will be back to RAAM 200-400 mile rides and perhaps a 508 this year if not able to swim. Every summer since 2010 I have said this is the year I will be able to swim again but it just hasn't been in the cards. Maybe 2014 is the year!

Just curious what everyone is thinking or has done. OS has been FUN FUN FUN

  • Hi Ray,

I am doing a Nov/Jan OS Hack primarily because of travel obligations, but also because shorter, intense stuff integrates better with trainer and treadmill time (mandated by my time availability and home latitude).

I did the first 8 weeks of the nov OS.

I have been out of town for the past 2 weeks without a bike, so I did a run durability/swim focus.

I will return to complete weeks 9-11 of nov OS.

Then I am gone for 11 days without bike = run/swim focus,

I will return to complete nov OS wks 12-13, and then I plan on skipping wk 14 (testing week), and repeating OS wks 10-14.

Then out of town for another 16 days for a run/swim transition into HIM for 6wks, and then ultimately into an IM plan per Rich's season plan.

It totals 21 weeks (18 weeks of OS plan, but with 3 weeks of run/swim interludes)...

The above is not officially sanctioned, but works for me. Hit up the coaches, and get their opinion. The may put you in a get faster plan rather than repeating some or all of the the OS.
  • Thanks Ian I was curious what everyone was doing. You sound like you have the life of a traveling tech consultant! I admire your dedication in trying to bundle all this in while having a travel schedule.
  • I'll be headed into the Get Faster plan to keep up the intensity, add in the swim, and get some longer workouts in. Then I'll start the HIM plan in week 10.
  • Ray,

I can't claim that much "hardship" for my travel schedule. 5/6 weeks are sanity vacations to the tropics to escape the reality of Wisconsin winters... Perhaps I was a little strong with my "travel obligations" descriptor!
  • oh then I take back everything I say with jealousy rung in!!!!
  • Ray - great question. Check out these "Master Training Plans for 2013" from the wiki

I take that plus some individual stuff I want to do and built the plan below back in Oct before the NOS.  I'll update it again after the NOS when I can take a deep breath and re-evaluate where I am.

  • Did you not submit a survey? Coach Rich should of given you direction like the post above.
  • I have a plan I was just curious what every one was doing after this and how they were transitioning. After being together for 14 weeks I feel like we are breaking up! I wanted to see if people jump on their TT bikes or what that kind of stuff.
  • @Ray - coach R has me doing a 2 week "swim camp" at the end of the OS - I think more as a mental reset. From there I go to the Get Faster program. I did the GF program last year after the Jan OS - it is no joke either! After that I go into a bit of the HIM plan and then into the Full IM plan. Two key races for me are Quassy Half (June) and IMLP (July).

I just switched to my tt bike for the second FTP test and have been on it since. The tt is noticeably tougher for me too!
  • @ Ray -- great idea to start this thread. i really missed the camaraderie of the OS after it ended last year, so hope to stay more in touch with fellow NOSers after Wk14. after the OS, I'm going to do a 2-week "swim camp" to transition back into the pool and give my legs a bit of a rest. then, it's straight into the IM plan in the buildup to IMTX. i do all my bike training on my TT bike on a trainer indoors, so will really just transition to outdoor riding for the longer rides
  • Yes Mike that's what I am asking about!!!! You got it. 14 weeks together I have enjoyed reading about everyone's achievements. I promise you all the camaraderie sure has helped me. I train 110% alone and never ever talked to anyone before about my training. This has been fun so  I want to know what everyone else will be up to and if we will see one another this summer.
  • Brad I am thinking I should have switched to the TT bike as well. Big difference isn't it? Less power but when you get outside you still will be faster. I may change this week.
  • I'll dive directly into the Swim-Camp to get some rest for legs and I really suck at swimming so some kind of "block-training" is really needed here image
After that I'll do 6-7 weeks of the GetFaster plan heading into the HIM plan. Pretty straight forward but I did these plans already last year and I KNOW they are no joke - especially the GetFaster was killing me last year after JOS!
  • @Ray et. al -- agreed on the camaraderie. I joined EN in July while training for my last race of the season. I LOVED the sprint group and felt adrift after everyone completed their races.

Same here! I train alone because of my schedule and this give me the support I need to bull through this hard, very hard training! I feel "unconnected" when I'm not in some training group in EN!
  • Funny...I was going to; and may still, start a thread about transitioning out of NovOS...was wondering if anyone had any OS-ending races of any type...who,what,where....

As far as your questions...I come out of/end NovOS on Feb with a half marathon (Myrtle Beach Half Marathon on 2/15 ...1-2 weeks of  ransition...and righ into IMTX race prep---12 weeks........

Note Last year...I did first 8 week of OS...then 8 weeks of GF into Myrtle Beach...this year I'm just staying with the OS...but running more, and am starting to add a bit of time to my rides....+ I have been swimming 2x week (Mon & Fri)...becasue I need the skill work...and the consistency...thus far it has been pretty light swimming mostly drills ...but I'll start to add some volume to one of the swims this month...

  • I am on the same plan as Mike
After the OS going to do the 2-week "swim camp" and then, straight into the IM plan to get to IMTX.

Also looking forward to transitioning to outdoor riding for the longer rides
  • @Gonzo

How will you acclimate for IMTX after the cold of Ohio? That is the problem I have with the early year stuff and I live in Atlanta.

Also you are way too fast to do anything more than an 11 if the heat is not a killer. The run always wins it.

So.... get as strong as you can on the bike save energy for what you do VERY WELL and you will have an outstanding IMTX

  • Thanks Ray ! I was thinking on aiming for 12 or less ! but I like a challenge !!! If I can continue to make progress with the bike FTP I may have a chance

The acclimation is going to be hard...specially after this tough winter...when I raced Texas in 2012 I was living in New Jersey and the weather there at that time was warmer than usual so it was not too bad...but this year I don't know what to expect. An alternative would be to do one of the camps...we were talking about it with Mike...but I don't know if my schedule will allow me given work commitments

  • @Gonzo a friend of mine in New York trained for Badwater in a Sauna. He did get strange looks though.
  • I'll move onto Swim Camp then Bike Focus Block

  • Looking for an outdoor 10K race or HM to wrap up this OS.  I'm in the northeast so difficult to find, but any suggestions would be great.

I too am moving on to Swim Camp then Bike Focus Block
