In need of a trainer , can you help?

I'm going to train this winter with trainer road.

I need to purchase a trainer, any suggestions and why you like your model?

Thanks, Yvette

  • What kind of trainer? I have the plain old fluid type, no power or resistance control.

I've had the Cyclops fluid for several years now, sturdy, reliable no issues with it, I can hear the TV just fine at normal volume, so its not very loud.  I just bought a Kurt Kinetic (after reading DC rainmaker reviews) because my husband wanted a trainer. He will be getting my old one.

For more reviews on the nicer trainers check out the review below.

  • Yvette - I really like my CycleOps Fluid Pro. The noise level is low, response curve is smooth, it is very stable, and the price (negotiated with my LBS) was very reasonable.
  • I also just got a Cycle Ops Fluid 2.  It was more expensive at my bike shop then on Amazon etc., but they through in the training block for me.  I was tempted to purchase the BKOOL trainer after reading reviews on DC Rainmaker http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/10/2013-trainer-recommendations.html, but couldn't justify the money.  I have spent plenty on bikes etc this year.  I don't need all the extra technology, I had been using a spin bike for inside riding so the trainer will be a plus.  It will allow me to use my spin or road bike, and I can hear/watch what I want while riding.

  • I have a Kurt kinetic rock n roll trainer. I think I bought after the first season w EN and as a relatively new rider, I wanted some of the more realistic feel when riding, especially standing. In hindsight, that expensive upgrade from their regular trainer prob wasn't necessary since I'm in aerobars 80%+ of the time. But I do like it.
  • Yvette, if money isn't an issue... the Wahoo KICKR is a bazillion times better than any of the fluid or mag trainers. It's all electronic resistance. It's $1,000 though. Well worth it, IMO.
  • Thanks Everyone one for your help!

Great input, I was able to research everyone's ideas and reached a decision.

Went with the Kinetic Road Machine Fluid Trainer.

Bob, I see why you like the Wahoo KICKR !  I just purchase my new Tri bike and need power and wheels, so the trainer drew the short straw. image ..... love my new bike.

Orbea/Ordu/Di2..went with stages power and hoping my garmin 310 works with it.  If not looks like garmin 510 is on the list.

    Thanks again for the help!

  • Love the Orbea. I ride an Ordu as well!!
  • Thanks Matt,

Nice to know you love the Ordu, not very popular in my area and was wonder how someone else liked it. Excited for spring so I can ride  outside!
