Motorola Droid, anyone have it?

So does anyone have the motorola droid? If so, what are your thoughts. I was thinking about an iphone, but really like verizon, so don't really want to switch. Was thinking about changing my blackberry to the Motorola Droid for better web browser than BB. Looks like a a bunch of other fun stuff.  Would love to hear any feedback  on it.

 Thanks

  • Hi Tracy,

Yeah, Im with you on the Blackberry issue. They have served reliably for a while, but compared to my iphone, they are SOOOO boring. I have heard pretty good review on the Droid. If you cant wait a few months, the new Windows Mobile 7 phones are going to be coming up and their touted to be the iphone killers from Microsoft. In any case, anything is going to be more fun than the BBerry.

  • Tracy- I'm with you on the Verizon/ATT switch barrier to getting an iPhone. I checked out the Motorola Droid at a store and found it to be really heavy and kinda klunky. I'm not quite ready to make that switch. The HTC Droid Eris was a little more appealing, but I understand the software isn't the full Android stuff. I'm totally not up to speed on all the cellphone application stuff! Would love to hear what others have found.
  • My wife got a Droid a few months ago. I have a BBerry and agree with you on the browser. Droid browser is better. I tried talking her into the iPhone but, like you, she was happy with Verizon. Her biggest complaint with the Droid is that she was experiencing A LOT of dropped calls. It turns out that the sensitivity of the touch screen is very high. It automatically locks the screen when it senses the warm skin on your face when you hold it up to your ear, but if you talk on your phone with your hair between your ear and the phone the auto-lock feature isn't enabled and the End Call or Hold button gets depressed (apparently a consistent problem with females if you search Droid forums). She now only talks on it with a hands free device because she was so frustrated. She admits now that I was right and she should have gotten the iPhone, mainly for the dropped call reason, but also because she had a tough time using the interface for the first couple months - just not very intuitive.
  •  Thanks everyone, Jim, also good to know. I might be able to wait a little longer, but my BB has been acting up.

  • I switched from an iPhone to a droid a few months ago and haven't looked back. Both of them are terrible phones in terms of holding to your face and using. Thankfully I don't actually talk on the phone to much.

In terms of functionality droid is light years better network wise. If you were in a crowded place (like any city, concert etc) the iPhone just sucked from my experience. Full bars etc but no internet or call capabilities. Drove me nuts. I am on call 24/7 so that just didn't work out for me. So far droid is much better in terms of network coverage, and I trust the indicator, meaning if it says I have service I am confident I have service (other than having to compulsively check).

Other good part of droid? blinking message indicator like the crackberry. Oh how I missed that with the iphone hehehe

In terms of apps etc. Quality is much better on iphone across the board. However there are a few things that rock on the droid. Droidlight (flashlight!) and weatherbug are great. Only app I truly miss is the chipolte app that made burrito buying a breeze. However you can just use the browser and it does work.

So yeah the phone portion of the mix does suck (but I would say on both) however I have been very happy with the droid.

  • I was going to get a Droid but I'm holding off for the Google Nexus One on Verizon...it should compare better with the iPhone.
  • Got the droid back flip this past weekend. Totally on a whim. I wanted a new phone and was looking at the Garmin. Sales guy told me it dropped calls a lot. Same price and I got this instead. So far really liking it. But I didn't have a touch screen before, so it is a very cool new toy for me.
  • FWIW, I did make the switch from Verizon to ATT for the IPhone.  I do miss the blinking light from my BB...  I have few problems if any other than dropped calls with the IPhone.  Love the apps and the combo ipod/phone.  Get a discount on ATT through work so the switch was worth it for me.

Anyone have info on the timeframe for the Google phone coming to Verizon?

  • Just got the Droid today! Still learning a lot about it, but like it so far...needed something to be more connected than just a phone.
