  • This will be my third year racing in Galveston (2011, 2012) and I am really looking forward to it. It is a fast course and I hope to close in on the 5 hour mark this year!
  • This will be my fifth year racing Galveston (2010-2014). I know the race very well so let me know if anyone has any questions.

This is my last year in the M40-44 AG and would like to end it with a 4:50-ish effort.
  • Bob, can I just ride 7 lengths behind you for a few hours? I don't think anyone will notice!
  • Sure thing.  We gotta workout the timing of getting out of the water and transition at roughly the same time.

  • Did this last year 2013. Good 'early' test. Now reserving motel room. Hope they change the final airport road at the end.
  • Don't bother trying to book a room at the host hotel or the other onsite hotel (Inn at The Waterpark or whatever it's called). They've been sold out for months. I normally book my room at the host hotel in December or January each year and the waiting list was a mile long when I called a couple of weeks back. I was told the hotel had been sold out for over two months.

I booked a condo at the Ocean Grove. It's on the Seawall at the beginning of the bike course.
  • Typical of host hotels. It's a nice place and convenient. Got Hampton Inn just a few minutes from site. Stayed there last year. Pretty nice but they too see ya coming and raise their weekend rates. Oh well the wife likes it too. Look forward to seeing all.
  • I always stayed at the 'luxurious' Beachcomber Inn.

Won't be able to make it down to Galveston this year though, it's the same weekend as the EN Tucson camp and I'll be coming back through AZ from NorCal to have fun with the team!!
  • In 2012 I stayed up in Texas City which was about a 20 minute drive in from the hotel. This year I will be staying about 30 minutes away with a former roommate from college. I only have to pay him in Boulevard Brewery Unfiltered Wheat beer that is brewed up here in Kansas City. I think a few cases of that should pay for the accomodation!
  • I am bringing the family and staying at Moody Gardens. We are making a long weekend of it. This will be part of my train-up for IMTX in the Woodlands. I am hoping for a nice long workout and staying healthy. Not trying to break any records, just want to "rehearse" a swim, bike run in a race environment.

Looking forward to meeting some EN folks in person. I am 99% sure I am hitting the IMTX EN training camp two weeks prior as well.

  • Hello Team EN. live in Baton Rouge, am a father of 2 and work a full time job. As such most of my training days start with a 3 as the first digit on the clock. I used to live in Houston and look forward to running this race. I am nervous about swimming in the ocean. I DNF my first Ironman in 2012 in Cozumel because I wasn't able to beat the current.
  • This will be my first attempt at Galveston.  I would appreciate some recommendations on any hotels in the area, since the host hotel is full.
  • @Chris, I usually stay at the Beachcomber Inn.
  • Thanks Scott. I checked it out, it looks reasonable. How close is it to the race?
  • Thanks Scott. I checked it out, it looks reasonable. How close is it to the race?
  • @Chris, I don't remember exactly. I do remember it's not easily walkable, but not too far driving.
  • @Chris Oubre - The swim is a protected swim back in the bayou. Not much current back there. You'll have a wet suit and the added buoyancy of the salt water. You ought to be able to glide this one on home without issue.

  • This will be my third time racing in Galveston.  The biggest challenge I have had is the wind.  2011 had a very strong headwind going out on the bike course and I averaged like 28 mph coming back.  2012 did not have much of a wind, definitely not enough to do 28 mph coming back in.

My goal is to beat my time from last year and qualify for 70.3 Worlds in Mt. Tremblant.

For those looking for a hotel we stayed at the Country Inn and Suites about 5 miles from Moody Gardens and unlike most hotels you could pay for a late checkout by the hour.  It is nice not to have to pay a full night (or a half) just to check out a few hours late.

  • Galveston will be my first 70.3 after doing two shorter races last year. My goal is to finish with a smile! As we get a little closer I'll put a sharper point on that goal.

I haven't had my tri bike for very long and I don't feel too comfortable on it just yet. How concerned should I be about the cross winds? I'll probably make a trip to Galveston a few weeks before to try out the bike course.
