Rather than run test this weekend, I feel comfortable using races that I have completed in the past 60 days to derive a VDOT. I have run a 5k and half marathon. Both of those race times land me squarely on a 43 VDOT. I saved this to my profile. Is this appropriate?

I probably do need to bike test. Cycling is my weak spot and very much my least experienced area.

It's great to be here!

Yep, that's cool. We just had to schedule testing at the end of this week, for the trial members, because everyone comes here from a variety of training zone systems and we need everyone to be speaking the same language next week.

  • My back injury is not improving. I just got back from the chiropractor and he is recommending a week away from training.
I can feel the muscle running down the left side of my spine and its tight as a guitar string and painful.
I had the pain about gone, then I tried to do three days of make up training this past weekend in order to try to hit my bike test today.
    I basically re-aggravated it.

Will a week away trash my IM plans, or can I try to jump back in after a short rehab?

  • Forgot to add that I can swim without issue. That actually makes the back feel better.

No, it won't trash your IM plans. That said...it's your back, doode. You need to listen to your doc and fix it, fix it right, and let other non-back-injury trivial stuff like triathlon sort itself out .

Short answer, listen to your doc and follow his orders. We'll talk about that means for future plans when you exit the process at the other end.

  • I never posted back about the medical issues. Found a good doc, did a trigger point injection on the leg that was causing all the problems. Been well since. The leg was making me hobble a bit, screwed up the back.

Both of my big days have been good. I am less sore/exhausted after this BD than the last, and the bike was an hour longer. I feel good about that. Nutrition and pacing was on point. I honestly felt like I had a good bit more in me for all three activities. Run actually ran longer than anticipated due to getting too far from home and then having to beat a thunderstorm to my front door. Good final push.

    1. Question about weight. My diet is clean, but I have gained weight. I am following my training plan to the letter and I don't wuss out of intervals. Lowest weight had been 204, but now I can weigh as much as 214 in the morning. (6'-3") This kinda hacks me off. I wanted to get down to like 190 for the IM. Going in the wrong direction.

    2. On to the main macro question: I will be at IMTX camp on Thursday night late. My plan has me doing a TT swim on Friday. Should I time trial the swim on Wednesday? (This seems obvious, but I figured I'd ask to be sure)

Also, just to try and help others .... I sent the wife and a couple friends for pedicures and drinks/dinner while I watched the kids. Easily got 2 for 1 SAUs off that action.

Please read this. The only thing that works for me is logging my diet and exercise. Exercise isn't enough, I have to track cals in vs cals out.

(This seems obvious, but I figured I'd ask to be sure) Yes, get it done before the camp. Patrick runs the camp, I don't know what swim opportunities he has for you.
