  • John....although this is technically in "driving distance" for me, this sounds like a race that is set in the depths of Hell!  Late June in West Texas, with an 8% climb, HIM?  I'm scared to death of IMTX weather....this sounds potentiallly worse, at half the distance!  Good luck.  Sounds "fun".  Maybe someday....not this year.  Do the crowds fan you?....or bring window A/C units to aim at you as you run?!

  • 2014 will be my 10th year doing tris and I've not yet signed up for Buffalo Springs 70.3. Enuf said if you ask me!

Given that, there are several of my Dallas peeps that sign up, every year, to go back to hell, I mean Lubbock.
  • @John

Way back in 1997 I got a lottery slot and had never ever done a triathlon! My coach made me do BS as my very first triathlon because he knew of no other race that emulated the conditions of Kona. I remember doing the ride and listening to my tires slurp on the oil chipped roads because the heat had brought the oil in the roads to a darn near boil. I went back the very next year! Man it is got to be one of the toughest.

  • @JOhn Congrats I think the campus is awesome and I really like the town. What will you be doing?

  • Random side note: If you like Potbelly, the sandwich shop, they just built one there in Lubbock near campus. They've got the BEST cookies! haha
  • Back for more in 2014. Yep this one is a cooker!! Finished BSLT in 2012 it was a whole lot more than I could have ever expected!!! In many many ways!! Miserable heat is perfect training for IM Louisville. Weekend road trip. This time I think my daughter (who's also doing IMLouisville) will come with me.

Anybody local that can best describe the CLIMB that's added back to the course this year - is it similar to the winding staircase (I think that's what they call it - the one that is full sun exposure & you can NOT scream down!!) or is it more like the climb out of T1 (or last climb before you roll back down to T2 - depending whether ur going up or down) or even like that long-ish up/down through a wide canyon - not so steep but gradual. I was very happy to have my 39X28!!! AND USED IT and more than once!
  • Thanks John for the description on this "added back in" hill - part of the mental prep - plus my 18yo daughter is also doing BSLT.  As a MoM I want to make sure I do EVERYTHING possible to help her prepare for IMLouisville (she did her first wet suit & OWS this past weekend - 2000m).  Yes, the Greers do put on an awesome race.  WHO, I mean WHO has refrigerated ICE TRUCKS on the course - in 100' temps?!? Or has ice/water golf carts rolling up & down Energy Road????

The whole purpose of doing this is race simulation for Louisville - and well I'd like to improve on my 2012 time.  My slow time is likely quite slower than yours - but I finished and there were still a couple Finisher Tshirts - long walk up to the parking field.  This time I will be on tri bike with 39X27 as my low gear.  Here in So AZ I do have an assortment of neighborhood hills that are short & steep.  And yeah - I too did the climb count down.
