Coach Rich,

A neighbor is trying to convince me to sign up for Challenge USA (24+ weeks out).  I think I can manage it but could use some direction / input.

Backgound - former EN member back in 2007-2009. Had an awesome IMAZ in 2008 thanks to Team EN.  My last race was IMLP 2009 and then my wife had twins and I have been in retirement from triathlon since.  Fast forward to 2014 and my 3rd son is almost out of diapers and I have neen given the green light to get back into tri, so here I am.

Current fitness - slightly overweight (could stand to lose about 10-15), have kept up running but nothing consistent, have kept up on swimming too but have not ridden a bike in 4+ years.

Sounds like you'll be starting from zero on the bike. Not a deal breaker...but that's a long time without riding. Why not start with a half this year, as you're not under any real pressure to do a full? Not saying it can't be done, it certainly can be, but there's no real "need" to go from zero to IM in 6mo.

That said, if the process sounds like fun to you, then that's enough. Go for it!

  • Thanks Rich.  A 1/2 would be the smarter choice but the full will be twice as much fun!  On a serious note, the main reason why I want to do this is for my neighbor and good friend who is doing his first.  we will be able to train together and our families do a lot of other activities together so me doing a different race wouldn't really work.  It will be an interesting journey which is why I came back to the EN team. - Thanks John

Cool, understood. See our Referral Program, if you feel like he could benefit from being on the Team.
