George's Micro Thread (HIM plan)

Hey Patrick,

This is my first week with the HIM plan (week 9) and I have a question about the bike intensity.  The HIM plan calls for weekend bike rides that have a lot of time in the 70-85% range (race pace)... is it important to actually power down to that range or, if I can sustain it, am I better off keeping as much of my ride in the 95-100% range?

Thanks!

  • George, the 80-85% is after the intervals (95 to 100% on Saturday), so you will have done that work on Saturday. On sunday the time is 80-85% on tired legs which is a valuable exercise.

The point behind the Zone 3 training time is that it's hard enough to create the adaptations we want without the cost of going in Zone 4 (95-100%). In a given HIM week you'll have two solid FTP bikes (Wed and part of Sat), which is pretty solid. After all, there's the training load from the run (and a lesser part, the swim) that we also need to keep in mind.

    does that help?
