Saturday Bike Volume

So was just curious what you NOV OS Peeps ...particularly those in cold climates...ie. NOT riding outside....are doing regarding Saturday ride volume?.

Everyone knows/agrees its still about the MS work...but how long are y'all riding in general?...keeping it to >2hrs?...Plans to increase?

Anyone considering/interested in Tour of Sufferlandia as a Big Bike Volume week to end the OS???

  • Hi Joseph,

I am planning to get outside Sat and do the OS work up front then add some Z3 in there for the first 2 hours then ride for 3 hours (Z2/Z1) total if possible......

Last week on the trainer I did 2:10 and it was brutal........

If I were to do the trainer again I think 2:15 is hard but doable.....

  • This year I don't do ANY extra-time on the SAT ride!
I need to add that I'm doing the run-hacked-OS which means I don't have Friday off. Instead I do the Z5 400's on Friday which is REALLY challenging after these brutal 5x5' @ 110% on Thursday evening. Taking all that into account I'm normally not in the mood to ride more than required at this point of the season.
I think I'll be riding inhouse for the next 3 months here in Austria so I'll have to do a lot of those super-hard GetFaster rides which are about 2-2,5h on the trainer ... a lot of fun upcoming image
  • FYI-  Stefan...I'm thinking/doing similar on my end....I think 2.5 with work is sufficient...assuming I will have time outside as I did last year...when is your first race in 2014?...big issue/question/concer for me is IMTX is very early...May...which only gives a short window for volume ramp...unless winter clears early...

  • Oh I see - my first race is pretty far away actually 6/1 so PLENTY of time for me ... that's also a reason why I don't bother about volume right now!

I did some volume increase last year in JOS and I believe it was up to 2h for the OS rides and then the mentioned GetFaster rides - all on the trainer.
IMHO the absolut maximum is 2:30 for a quality-ride on the trainer!
I did 3 or 4 rides up to 4h but this was just turning the crank nothing else ... waste of time
  • I'd rather run ~2.5 hours on a dreadmill (which I regularly do) than the same amount of time on a drainer, but that's just me!

I'm happy for any of you that can suffer through 2+ hours of drainer time, esp those in the 5-6 hour range. Not me. Then again, I can usually get outside most of the time, living here in North Texas.
  • @Stefan - what is this GetFaster that you mentioned?
  • I wanted to increase my time last week to 2 hrs on the trainer. The MS and then 1 hour in zn3. I got off after 90 min because of boredom and soccer games were over on NBC sports. I'll try again this weekend, but 2 hours is tough and even tho I felt great last weekend, the mental aspect of riding in the same place is hard.

  • I have been bumping the Saturday ride 15 minutes each Saturday. I did 2:45 last week and will try to get in about 4 hours by end of OS. all of that extra time in high Z3. I have done 8 hours at a crack on the trainer training for some 200 to 400 mile races so these are cake!!!! And I LOVE the bike and volume.

However if you want to be fast listen to the crazy Austrian.

  • @Joseph - Yes, I'm in for TOS - all lined up with TR and the Sufferfest videos.
  • @Dawn - GetFaster is the name of one of RnP's bad-ass plans image Whenever possible they will tell you to load that one up. The SAT rides there combine our beloved long FTP repeats (eg 2x20') plus they are adding VO2 sets right after that work (eg 10x 1/1'). They are planned to last 2-2,5h and you just add Z3 time for the last hour.

@Ray - I still can't believe you did those incredible Trainer rides!! Amazing!
  • @Joe. I'm in for the ToS - entered this evening. I have a few of the videos already, plus they're in TR IIRC. We should all have quads of steel when were done!
  • @Stefan - just looked at the get faster plans and nearly chocked on my coffee. I thought that the OS was hard, but the Get faster = brutal!!
If I'm going to be 2-2.5hrs on the turbo then I'll better go purchase some decent box sets to distract me from the pain. Think I'm going to miss the "easy" Outseason!!!
