Jud's Micro Thoughts

Hi Patrick!  Looking at Wk 12 Tuesday - my plan calls for 80 min Bike, but in Trainerroad the workout is for 60 min.  Why is there a discrepancy?  I really like the TR workouts and the data they provide as I am using the Virtual Power for the first time. Is there another way to sync these workouts with yours?

Thanks for your help!

  • @Jud, it was an issue on our end...should be fixed now. My apologies!!!!!
  • Hi Patrick,

I am starting the Intermediate Get Faster Plan tomorrow and it calls for two runs for the first Sunday. Is this correct and if so, should I do one morning and the other at night?
    Thanks, Jud
  • JD I am in the INT GF plan Week 1 and I see a run on Sat after the bike and then a run on Sunday...together it looks like both are on Sunday but the first is Sat. Make sense? Or are you in a different week?
  • Hi Patrick! I am in the Vancouver Airport on my way home from 700 km over 7 days in Tucson and Vegas. I had a great time learning what sunshine and riding outside are again. I am Week 7 of 8 of the GF Intermediate Plan and am asking how much or any recovery time I should take before I resume workouts when I get back. Today is Tusday and travel means no workouts, but I will be home tomorrow for the 3 x 1 mile workout - should I jump back in or lay off for a bit? I definitely have some fatique in the legs and body, but could pull it off if it's a good idea.

Thanks for your help! PS - I was riding with buddies who were kicking my butt last year and was well ahead of them on these rides. Good progress!

  • Jud...awesome...yes you need to rest up...I would have you do the interval run on Thursday, then Friday through Sunday as best you can...so Wednesday is OFF. Call it the official "get-back-to-regular-life" day. image Any pics to share with the team or recommended rides?
  • Hi Patrick! I tweaked my shoulder last Tuesday during the swim and am seeing a Physio to bring it back up to speed. I am taking two weeks off the swim to help it out. I feel good about my swim fitness, so am not too worried about that side of things. How should I adjust the next testing week and following week with the swims out?

Second, I love Trainer Road, but I have no power meter for outside riding. I have also had no decent heart rate data for the past two months because of a faulty heart rate strap. The strap was replaced last week, so I have a bit of data, but no test. What test should I do this week - power or heart? I will still be doing my riding 50/50 outdoors depending on the weather.

Third, the last set of tests was a month ago... Can I expect much of a change over that length of time?

    Thanks for your help! Jud
  • jud -

Before I can advise you on changes to your training plan, you have to let me know what plan you're actually doing. :-) Let me know about that and I can help you with the swim.

Even with the transition to outdoor riding, I encourage you to be indoors on Wednesday to continue to take advantage of the trainer road workouts.

You should get a general speed and heart rate number from your test, which we can then begin to apply outside. It's never easy to take your heart rate number outside and ride it will be a gradual process, not just one test.

We test every four weeks if only just to monitor your progress and fatigue levels, not just for performance gains. Waiting too long can often lead to bigger problems manifest themselves in such a way that stopping them is almost impossible.
  • Hi Patrick!

I am just finishing the intermediate NOS and it's testing week next week. I have only one race planned this year (IMCDA) as I live in the Yukon and must travel to find any triathlons. A couple of questions:

    1. Plan calls for a Half Marathon or 10 km next Sunday - there are no races and it's going to be -20 next week with icy roads and snow. I have polled a few of the other athletes and it looks like they are mostly doing 5 k's. My run will probably have to be on the treadmill where I have been most of my workouts. What distance should I do?

    2. Longer term question - not sure if this is for you or Rich as it's related to the question above. I am heading to Tucson again this year at Spring Break (March 22) and I signed up for the Desert Half Marathon at the beginning of the week. The purpose of the trip is to get bike volume and see the sun again. Should I use that Half as a replacement for this week's test and go 100% or as a training run?

    Thanks, Jud
  • Jud, thanks for checking in. Wow that's some legit weather. I suggest a 5k treadmill test for now, you can do the half in Tucson. I think the half will be a good tool to set a season-specific VDOT and exactly what you need to make sure you don't bike too hard while there. Have you checked in with Tim Cronk? He's there all winter and training it up...follow him on Strava and that guy knows all the routes.
