  • Yay, go Wildflower. They claim they have enough water, so I'm planning to sign up.

I want some revenge on the course this year. Last year I had some kind of bug and had a miserable race, finishing over an hour behind my prior times. This will be my fourth WF long course, so hopefully I know the course by now image.

I've never camped at the race before. Is coach Rich going to get something together for that? Is there even availability of campsites anymore? This is a team key race, right? Hopefully we'll have a big EN contingent.
  • Timely creation of the forum, I just signed up for WildFlower Long Course last night. Logistics of getting there seem to be more difficult than most races but sounds like it will be worth it. Bought the Friday / Saturday camping option. Can someone fill me in on the camping, do we each get our own campsite or will there be a group site for EN? Additionally, can anyone point me to the link of a race webcast by the coaches for a previous years race? The link in the WIKI is not working for me and I have a support ticket in.

Racing WF with good friend and fellow EN Bill Lowe. We are both racing IM CdA then about 7-8 weeks later
  • This will be my third year at Widlflower. It's a super race and last year left me humble. The heat sapped my and cost me almost 40 minutes versus the year prior. This year I will return hopefully a little wiser... That is, if the there is a lake.....

Jason - FYI - I did Wildflower last year and then CdA as well. The worked great for me....
  • Dino, have you camped there before? I've always gotten a hotel or stayed at a friend's in Paso Robles. Do you know if coach Rich is planning to camp?
  • Yes. The first year I camped two nights and it was fine. I was camping with the bare minimums - two man tent, air mat, sleeping bag, ice chest. I also brought wood for a fire. It was a snap. We also had a big Tri Club contingent there and were able to share resources. That first year Coach Rich was also there with toy hauler and a few EN'ers.

Last year I rented an RV in L.A. and drove it up. I also brought the wife and kids. It was about $500 all in, but it was a massive upgrade. There were no hook ups available and its park where you can, but it was still great to have A/C with the generator and a hot shower.

Either way you go, camping totally adds to the vibe....
  • You must camp. That's what WF is all about, the middle-age spring break vibe. The race itself is just a side show .

Yes, I'll be there with my trailer, 2 x grills, firepit, wood, dog, and about 50lb of carne y polla asada

  • Hi folks, just signed up for Wildflower so great timing on the thread, appreciate all the stuff about camping, and yes, let' pray for water in the lake and no fires!  Sounds like a challenging half.  My "A" race is Ironman CDA this year, but looking forward to a real tester at Wildflower, it has me extra motivated right now for sure!!!

Look forward to this thread along the way and see you there,

    Bill

  • Wow, if Rich and Dino are going again, I may have to sign up. It was a blast a few years ago.
  • This will be my first time at wildflower and I'm stoked! My husband and I are road tripping with another couple from southern Oregon. Will be tenting it and roughing it with the best of them. Also doing CDA. Can't wait to kick off the tri race season with this one.
  • Did anyone elses training schedule call for a race rehearsal this past weekend?

Swam my normal masters swim Friday night. Swam 3000 yards but none of it more than 300 at a time.
Saturday started 7:45AM clear but 34 degrees
Biked 56 miles in 2:52. Did 20 minutes of 195W and then averaged 219 for remainder of wide. A few watts shy of my planned 225W. Two bottles of perform and 4 gels. (would do an extra 1-2 bottles on race day but just too cold and didn't need the fluids). HR was at 139 avg and I think VI was 1.02.
Ran my 6 miles. First 3 miles at 7:55 which is Zone 2 plus 30 seconds (did a little walking to hit the 7:55) then nailed next 3 miles at 7:25 HR around 159. Drank 4 oz perform each mile.

Felt good for first race rehearsal of the season. Would enjoy hearing how your rehearsals went.
  • Jason, great job. Yes, my plan also called for a race rehearsal but I wasn't able to get it together for last weekend. Your rehearsal seems to have gone off really well! Great job.

Are you still racing? I saw that Rich pulled the race off the EN calendar, but I'm still planning to go. Will you be camping? Anybody else still going? I signed up literally the morning of the day that Rich sent out the email pulling the race off the calendar.
  • Actually did the race rehearsal on Saturday image. Went off pretty well. I broke my crank on my bike last week and replaced it with a nice new Ultegra one. I don't know if it's the crank or that I was better rested, but I was able to hold my power much better on the ride. Ended up doing 55 miles with 1600 feet of climbing in 3:09. NP was 182. Ran the 6 miles on a very flat but windy course in 50:23. Feeling pretty ready for the race now.

Saw the course changes due to the lack of water. Looks like it should be interesting. I certainly won't miss that out and back section they removed. Running back up that hill is tough!

Who else is planning to race still? I guess we'll be chatting in the call tonight. Talk with you then.
  • Hey Bryan, nice job.  We have 4 folks from AZ still racing, and we are picking Jason up in LA on the way, so will be 5 of us rolling in Fri eve (3 Endurance Nation folks).

I have been doing something almost as crazy as the Wildflower ride for training on the bike, so feel pretty good there, but am just starting to feel like I'm getting my running legs, so I think the run will be a good test for me.  Have been getting some sports Asthma on the longer training days, mild, but will get an inhaler, so no exuses on my end!

Looking forward to racing.  Talk to you soon!

    Bill
