"Swimless Camp"

Hi there! Ready to wrap up the OS and head to swim camp, but I'm not going to be swimming until March-ish sooooo, what can I replace the swims with, without losing the recovery/absorb the OS intent of swim camp? My run needs work so would adding some easy running be OK? What do you think?

Sincerely,
Not ready for the pool yet. :)

  • @Kim, I can't remember why you can't swim; I assume this is a personal decision (or am I missing an injury!?). IF you aren't doing swim camp, you can still focus on recovery and core, etc. I would plan on the first week being no running (walking okay) and some easy cycling...Week two could see you do a mini run camp of 7 days of 30' to 40' runs with great form...how does that sound?
  • Coach P- Guess I should have looked at the plan more closely before writing this. Looks like there are 3 runs/week during swim camp so I'll probably jsut stick to that. There is only one bike so would I be better off doing another bike? If so, what intensity?

No injury but I have my gym membership on hold for a couple more months. Last year I maintained my swim with much less swimming so I'm going to save time, energy (both physical and mental) and SAUs by limiting it as much as possible. I kind of carry the OS swimming philosophy throughout the year. DO the minimum req. to maintain. Once the swim becomes my limiter, I'll worry about that. But for now, my sucky run is my limiter so sorry swimming, you lose! image
  • One more thing.... I'm planning on doing a bike road race 4/26(Quabbin reservoir) which is good Quassy training. https://www.bikereg.com/Net/quabbin-reservoir-classic-road-race

Given that is early for me for a 62 mi ride and assuming I'll need to start ramping up while I'm still on the trainer, what would u reco for modifications to the GF plan to prep? I'm only trying to get though the ride as best I can and not totally embarrass myself, although on a hilly ride, that is probably still likely. image
  • @Kim, I say run and only one bike -- 1/2 the point of Swim Camp is having you recover!! image And your overall plan is totally fine by me....lots you can do with 10 minutes and swim cords anyway, at home, if you really want to keep the swim up.

Quabbin!! I never raced it but used to ride around it all the time! The first 26 miles of that ride are the real deal....there is a short hard climb (small) followed by a monster with a slight break...a descent to recover, then two more good hills....once you turn right on 122 you have left most of the elevation behind you. Good luck!!!

Thanks, I'll chill for the 2 weeks of Swimless camp.  Can you provide some direction on the above?  Just wondering what kind of prep I should do for Quabbin, assuming I'll be on the trainer.  How much time should I add, and what intensity, etc.?  Thanks!
  • How hard you want to ride is a function of how hard you want to ride on race day. image At 62 miles it will be a 3 hour tour of fun and suffering. The basic HIM plan should have you doing intervals that are certainly as long as any you will do on race day…I think by april 5 you want to be comfortable riding about 2.5 hours as FTP main set + as much ABP as you can stand…as in you won't be comfortable and you'll hate us…
