Andrea's Micro

Dear Coach Patrick,

My name is Andrea Rossi and I am a new member of the team.  I joined the team in early January, but unfortunately I had to discontinue my training due to appendectomy and post-surgery infection.

I'm past 3 weeks into the recovery process and now feel that I can cycle at Z1 through Z3 and jog or run at Z1 through Z2.  Per the doctor instructions I still can't go in the pool.  What do you think would be appropriate for me to work on this week given the long forced stop and given that I'm possibly functioning just at around 60-70%?

To give you some background, the plan I was following was the Advanced 70.3.  My first key race of the year is Oceanside 70.3 with an goal of 4:40 or less. Now I'll be happy if I'll be able to compete and finish the race and I'll be even happier is I can go sub 5.

Thanks,

Andrea Rossi

  • @Andrea - so sorry to hear about your surgery and complications (I had an infection after collarbone surgery too...total PITA). We'll need a week just to get you consistent first. I would keep your plan up....but I would only go for time, not intensity. Tomorrow is "off" (a swim) but you could do a short 30 minute run with some core, etc....then ride on Sat and Sun. Let me know how you feel after the weekend.

From my experience, it takes about 6 weeks to feel "normal" re your training, at which point you'll still feel behind fitness-wise. BUT you'll be in a place to do some real work and the gains will come pretty quickly after that.
