Swim Camp Mind Torture

I am wondering how everyone in the swim camp is adjusting. If you are a 50 something triathlete, you remember the movie "Apocalypse Now". It's funny, but I have always flashed to one scene from that movie during this time of year. The training performed during the NOS was more intense than years past. Although it was only 14 weeks, that intensity became the norm. There were so many days with sore muscles. On days they weren't sore, they were stiff and tight. Now here I sit in the first week of a two week swim camp. My favorite place is strangely quiet. My bike is not even talking to me. The wheels aren’t spinning. Although my body knows it needs the recovery, with apologies to Martin Sheen, my mind is saying: When I was in the NOS, I wanted to be here. Now, all I want to do is be back there. I'm here a week now getting softer. Every minute I sit here I'm getting weaker and every minute "Charlie" is riding his bike, he's getting stronger.

Anyway, that is just my perspective.

  • I love it....so true!  Thanks for that

  • Sounds like swim camp is going to be like taper.  It is very hard to rest and recover.  I am ready to kick in the IM Texas plan and get to work.
  • Pretty much the same feeling is tapering week(s) before your A-Race image
  • I am sorry to say that I disagree. I don't think that getting back into the pool after such a long break from swimming has been easy, or has felt like a taper. Maybe my legs aren't sore like they are after the bike, but my upper body and core are definitely feeling the workouts. However, its quite possible that Edwin is in much better shape than I am image
  • Just call me Charlie!

  • I have on my schedule to load the Swim camp this Sunday. I'm actually really excited to get back in to the pool.
  • I am scheduled to begin swim camp next week. Given that I haven't been in the pool in close to 4 months, I've got to say I'm really not looking forward to it. I've never looked forward to swim wko's as it is, but I remember coming out of last years OS, it took a few weeks to get up to speed so to speak. I remember struggling to do 1500 yds my first time back. The EN swims are nothing like my pre-EN swims where I kinda just went through the motions...but then again, neither are the bike and run image
  • OMG, that is sooooooo funny!!! I love that scene, but had never related it the way you did Edwin. My brother, who I think can almost quote the whole movie, often jokes around about what it would be like to have Captain Willard as your next door neighbor.......scarry!!!!!
  • When I am working nights, I am Captain Willard. My sleep average drops to 3 hours, I don't talk and everyone stays away. I just don't use all of the crutches that he does in that hotel room.

  • I am boycotting the "swim" in swim camp. I don't plan to start swimming for Quassy until March so no point in getting started now!
  • @Steve, watch the documentary of the making of the movie. The character Captain Willard wasn't far off from where Martin Sheen was in real life. Martin Sheen was pretty much drunk and loaded throughout the entire making of the film. lol
  • "Shit, I'm still only in swim camp(Saigon). Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the outseason (jungle)".
  • Ec you better not be the captain! You're packing!!!
  • @ Darren...I'll check it out, thanksimage
  • And then I had the mission! So, I completed the first week swim portions. My schedule would not allow me to swim on the exact days set out in the plan. The plan called for swims Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I swam Wed, Thurs & Fri.I got three swims in and was not surprised that the first swim was the fastest. I did improve Friday over Thursday, but not up to Wednesday yet. I ran as directed and perhaps a bit more and a bit harder. But, that is for me and my garmin to know. Today's workout was great. 10 X 1 at Z5. I beat the gorilla up. I did the warm-up with the 3 X 1 minute Z4 fast cadence. Then, I added a 5 minute VO2 effort and hit 1.14 IF. The 10 X 1 were all 1.24 IF or above.

  • Before I went to bed last night I charged my Finis MP3 Player, put on a new set of songs and hooked it up to my goggles ready for my first swim since October.... Made it to the pool and saw that I left the goggles at home......AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!! A helpful swim coach lent me hers, but they were the small inside your eye socket kind. They worked well and had good enough suction that they nearly pulled my eyeball out when I took them off. Looked like I had black eyes and my students had a chuckle all day. The swim was less painful than expected - no stamina, but the form seemed pretty good. Ready for Wednesday with the goggles in the bag right now.
  • @Judson: those are called "Swedish goggles" and that's all I've worn since high school swimming (20+ years ago).  Once you get used to them (they shouldn't leave black eyes) they are far superior to all other goggles.  No leaks ever.

I actually skipped the Swim Camp and stayed in the OS for an extra two weeks.  Can't say I missed all of those swim drills.

  • This morning I had my own goggles and Brad Paisley blasting Mona Lisa through my head - the swim was well above expectations, probably because Monday was so ugly. Also had more stamina than expected. Here's to good times in Swim Camp! Have fun out there people!
  • just an FYI, if you havent peeked ahead, you have no idea the joy that is saturdays bike. Kids had a snow day today, so no swim for me. Managed to get in saturdays bike, and it was CRUEL!!!! 10x1 @ vo2
  • @Steve Boer...haha, just did 8 X 1.5 @ Vo2 this morning with a .95 IF overall for the 1hr. wko.....that's why it's called the "pain cave" image
  • @Steve, The snow is ever present here. A little over a foot yesterday, made the day very long plowing after work. It effectively wiped out my chance at the pool. Woke up this morning to no additional snow but it is -1 outside. The The mill of dread will be used. I am planning to do today's run now and the swim at noon. BTW, don't waste those SAU's on the bike. As fun as the 10 X 1' are, they can easily cost big units.

  • I'm one swim behind already, but I'm hoping to make it up. I always struggle with the first few days of swimming as half way through I feel really sick to my stomach, so I just have to cut it short as no one wants me hurling in the pool. It's not a fatigue issue, but I'm thinking it's more of a breathing and rotation issue---just not smooth or used to it. It goes away eventually, but I know that it takes me more time to get back into swimming.

    Good luck my fellow fishes!!!
  • Got in an abbreviated swim today, after banking the SAU by going to lunch and shopping with her. I've been getting the swims done, have even improved times a wee bit (after switching from SCY to SCM), only issue I've had is the nasty cramps that I get in the arch of my foot.
  • Third swim of the week complete! Felt better each time I was in the water. I tried a hard 100m and hit a 1:30. Did it again two more times and hit the time to the second. I stopped, fairly exhausted, but happy that some of the speed gained from last year is still there. Finished the 10 x 1minute Z5 this morning and again, new targets hit reasonably well. Nice to be on the bike after a week - I think it missed me! Good luck out there everyone!
  • A week behind, starting swim camp today. Just have to find my dang fins, and I'm off to the pool!

Any words of advice from previous Swim Camp alums would be greatly appreciated!
  • Completed 1,000 yd time trial and final swim of Swim Camp this morning.
    Time: 17:39
    Av Pace/100yd: 1:46
    Av Golf: 87
I maintained a steady 17 strokes per lap (25 yds)

I really surprised myself on the swim these past two weeks. I went into last week having not swam in over 8 years and with no concept of what proper swim technique is. The first swim w/o, which I completed on Wednesday was very humbling. It took me 20 mins to swin 400 yds. I was spent after that effort. The second and third w/o's on Thursday/Friday went considerably better. The more I focused on breathing the more comfortable I became. I swam 1,000 in 30 minutes.

By the second week I was able to complete the entire w/o's. The final day, I completed the time trial and Masters Swim w/o for a total of 3,000 yds. I must agree with the coaches' assessment that swim technique comes back, or in my case is learned, in very short order.
  • 1000m TT done deal. I thought this would be much more of a struggle as I have not done more than 200m in the last two weeks of Swim Camp. I was happily surprised to pound out a 17:00 with 8:34 in the first 500m and a 8:26 in the second half. I did not feel totally wasted as I was sure I did not have the endurance to finish but it just got better and better. Good to see that 8 months off of swimming did not ruin me!
  • Did the 1,000 yd TT this afternoon.  15:06.  1:30/100 yds.  Out in about 7:32, back in about 7:34.  Okay starting point.  I think I was ahead of this pace time last year, but didn't really get any faster.  I think the delay in starting my swimming will pay off when I do Raleigh 70.3 in June.  Especially considering I've been able to devote more quality time to my biking and running.

Not really used to doing so much drill work as we are doing now, but I would say I am pretty good at thinking of my stroke most all the time.  I've been self-coached in swimming for a long time.  Last year I tried to do primarily kicking and pulling on Mondays.  Long distance on Wednesdays.  Speed work on Fridays.   I am looking forward to longer sets in our wko's, if that's what on tap.  I'm all in, so whatever they give us is what I'll be doing.
