New Tri Bike and Gear

Hi all:

I've saved my money and am ready to buy new gear for 2014! Would love to get your input on best buys, worst buys, and must have's.

I've got a HIM and IM planned for the season, with some extra racing planned if possible. Over the years, I've had Trek, Quintana Roo, and Felt bikes. No preference for brands, really, but am leaning toward another Felt, a Cervelo, Specialized, or maybe an Orbea. All are available at the local bike shops.

I'm planning to spend $3000 - $5000, including power meter.

Got any recommendations? Specifically interested in hearing your thoughts on power meter recommendations.

Thanks!

Matt

  • I'd reach out to coach Rich about a power meter. He can hook you up with one in your budget. More variety out there these days from wheel, crank, pedal and they all work reasonable well. Power meters have become more personal in terms of a choice because there is more variety. I have crank based quarq because I move it from bike to bike and like to use different wheels.

In terms of a bike I'd get fitted first and remain brand agnostic. Don't get your heart set on a shinny new brand X bike only to find that it doesn't fit you. Tri bikes tend to be long and low or short and tall and each brand has models that fit a certain fit style. Once you know your body geometry and limits you can then shop for the bikes that fit you.
