70.3 Registered

Rich,

I watched the screencast and wanted to update you that I have registered for Lake Stevens 70.3 - you had mentioned that you may update my plan so wanted to give you the heads up.

Comments

  • I am planning on it as well.
  • Paul - glad to hear it and look forward to meeting you!
  • Rich - also I am targeting the OC Olympic on 6/1 in case that impacts the revised schedule.  Haven't registered yet but will unless I hear differently from you for some reason.  I'll continue existing plan just set up unless I hear otherwise.  thanks.

Ok, thanks. Will get this done shortly.

  • Several topics to cover:

    1) Took the swim test and it looked about like my races.  200 yds of respectable form, pace etc followed by a lot of survival.  My swimming is sucking, at best.  I am going to get a coach to look me over this week and help me sort it out but meanwhile, should my swim piece of the plan be amended?  My swimming does not appear to be entirely related to current fitness levels so I'm hoping some quick fixes may help (largely breathing technique and mental approach).

    2) Swim test part two - am I supposed to post results somewhere like we do for run and bike?

    3) As per my race plan, I have a sprint this Saturday.  It is for fun with my daughter for her first race so not a big deal but my plan does not seem to reflect this race despite having plugged it in.  Any changes to this week's training?

    4) The majority of my bike has been in the gym on a stat bike - including recent testing.  This is primarily due to limited timing and location for getting the bike out in recent weeks.  How much of a downgrade is this from the real thing?!  In LA, can be hard to find local spots where I can get any rhythm going -  a lot of starting and stopping.

    Thanks!

I recommend you work with that coach to get a prescription of drills and then work those into/ do them in place of the workouts in your training plan.

    2) Swim test part two - am I supposed to post results somewhere like we do for run and bike? No, sorry, we don't have anything like for the swim tests.

    3) As per my race plan, I have a sprint this Saturday.  It is for fun with my daughter for her first race so not a big deal but my plan does not seem to reflect this race despite having plugged it in.  Any changes to this week's training? That's correct, your training plan doesn't change for these intermediary races you have your calendar. IE, races that happen in route to the "bigger" race on which your current training plan is set to end. No changes required to your training for this week and just do the race in place of your scheduled workout for that weekend day.

A MUCH better alternative would be your bike on an indoor trainer. Is this something you can hook up? I see you're in Pasadena. I'm in Monrovia, Dino Sarti is in Sierra Madre, Peter Noyes is in Sunland. Dino is president of the Pasadena Tri Club and I'm the founder.

    Thanks!

  • Rich,

Wanted to confirm that I'm to stay in current plan until 6/15 and then....what?  Only two months to shift gears and prep for my first HIM?  Thanks.

  • Also, have a really debilitating cold/flu and am probably down for the week.  Back at it next week but traveling out of country and may have workout challenges.  Stay the course or hit a 2 week pause on plan?
  • Hey David,

When I did your TSR last month you told me your Oly was on 6/1:

"Rich - also I am targeting the OC Olympic on 6/1 in case that impacts the revised schedule.  Haven't registered yet but will unless I hear differently from you for some reason.  I'll continue existing plan just set up unless I hear otherwise.  thanks."

So I made the TSR with this date:

Now you're saying June 15th. Which is it? Please also tell me what training plan and week you're in this week, so I can redo this for you. Thanks.

  • I'm entered in the Orange County OLY on 6/1. You have me in Short Course Beginner, 20 Weeks. I'm in week 10 and this plan is what is scheduled to end 6/15. I re-watched my screen cast and it looks like you were going to transition me to the next plan Mid-May. Thanks.

    David,

Per the screenshot above, you should have the SC plan set to end on 6/1, not 6/15. Please make that change, loading up the Beginner SC plan to end on 6/15. This will bump you forward in the plan to Wk12, which is not a big deal. It's more important that, when the time comes, we get you into the race rehearsals, taper, etc at the correct time, in relation to your 6/1 race.

Then on 6/2, load up the HIM plan to end on 8/17. You should be all set at that point.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • I'm sorry Rich - super sick so brain not working well and maybe I'm confusing your response unnecessarily. From your response....

"Per the screenshot above, you should have the SC plan set to end on 6/1, not 6/15. Please make that change, loading up the Beginner SC plan to end on 6/15"

I presume you mean end on 6/1?

And 10 weeks of HIM focus is sufficient? Thanks for indulging a rookie....

That's correct. Today I want you to load up the Beginner SC plan to end on 6/1, sorry for the confusion. Yes, 10wks is more than enough. In fact, keep in mind that between now and 6/1, as you're in the SC plan, you're absolutely building your fitness in advance of dropping into the HIM plan 10wks out. You'll be more than ready, no worries.

  • OC race complete and loading up HIM plan ending on 8/17 Lake Stevens. Puts me in week 10 of 20....that's where you want me, correct? The very first workout is a 2900M swim but that must be some sort of typo right?! Actually, swim has come a long way so am hoping I'm good to go for the step up in yardage.

Yes, that's correct. You'll be fine with the bump in yardage, no worries. Good luck!

  • Rich- for a number of reasons I'm having to bail on Lake Stevens. I've signed up for Oceanside 70.3 and will submit a new race plan so that I can recalibrate my training. thanks.

Ok, thanks for the update. FWIW, I had every intention of signing up for CA but it sold out so quickly and so...the $700+ charity spot is too rich for me. But I do plan on being down there for the race.

  • 10 weeks out from HIM California, I've tried to keep my schedule as open as possible in order to hit every workout and to be sure I can block out the time for big weekend training days. That said, it is going to be a challenge:

    1) This Saturday (end of Week 11), I am supposed to the 5 hour Big Training Day #2 but Saturday is out with a funeral etc that can't be missed. Shift it to Sunday and assuming so, do I make any changes to the rest of this week (or next for that matter)?

    2) The following week (12), I am off the grid from Friday-Monday, back at it Tuesday (if still alive). What do I do about this?

I've got additional travel challenges week 13 but will do my best to keep it going while on the road.....NO additional major schedule problems in the forecast through late March race day.

Also, and you are local, can you recommend any good relatively flat / traffic free routes for biking other than the rose bowl loop for the RR?

Lastly, if I don't have a trainer to use for HR bike testing, what would be your next preferred approach?

    Thanks!
  • Also, while I'm not real strong on any of these disciplines, I think perhaps a plan weighted to running would be advisable. Thoughts?

Shift it to Sunday and assuming so, do I make any changes to the rest of this week (or next for that matter)? Yes, do it on Sunday, take Monday 100% off, then get back on the regular schedule on Tues

    2) The following week (12), I am off the grid from Friday-Monday, back at it Tuesday (if still alive). What do I do about this?  What does "off the grid" mean. Can you run? If yes, run as often as you're able to that week. If not, don't worry about it and just pick up the regular schedule when you get back. This should help you sort out your training and travel.

I've got additional travel challenges week 13 but will do my best to keep it going while on the road.....NO additional major schedule problems in the forecast through late March race day.

Also, and you are local, can you recommend any good relatively flat / traffic free routes for biking other than the rose bowl loop for the RR? Most of us do RR's on some combination of the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel river trail bike paths and hwy 39/Azusa Canyon. The Bowl is no bueno.

Lastly, if I don't have a trainer to use for HR bike testing, what would be your next preferred approach? Testing on the bike paths. The Santa Fe dam is good for this, as is GMR or Chantry

    Thanks!

You're a little too close to the race to do a "focused" training plan. The OS is better for that. If it were me, I'd look at

    • Adding an additional run per, and/or
    • Adding moderate volume to my existing runs, and/or
    • Running hilly routes.
  • In the final week leading to Oceanside. Schedule runs til Sunday but the race is Saturday. What should I ditch?
  • I believe the schedule this week includes guidance for how to modify this week to accommodate a Saturday vs Sunday race, no? If not, move everything up a week, so that Tues becomes Monday, etc.
  • Oceanside is in the books and went well for the most part. Simply wanted to race smart, execute and minimize mistakes- mission accomplished. I met my conservative goals and want to get faster going forward. I do not have any races to put on the calendar yet but want to keep momentum. I need a plan to do so with emphasis on Run > Bike > Swim. I'll run some Sprints and Olympics over the next several months while contemplating a late season HIM and then Oceanside again. Thoughts for a plan?

    As always, thanks!

    Congrats on Oceanside!

Please submit to me your "most likely to do these races" race schedule to me via the Triathlon Season RoadMap link under the Training tab above and I'll plan this out for you. Thanks!
